Clean up tags

I have a Calibre library with about 2,000 epubs organized with roughly 15 bookshelves and an additional 20 tags. I'm putting these files on my Kobo Clara HD and access them with KoReader.

When I use Calibre's "update cached metadata on device" and use KoReader to search by Calibre metadata and browse tags, I see thousands of tags except my own tags and bookshelves. Some of the additional tags read for instance (1), 181, history, etc. and seem to be the tags embedded in the epubs themselves.

With the Calibre's "configure this device", how can make only my own tags visible in KoReader?

The problem you are having is that KOReader does not read the Kobo database for the metadata. KOReader is reading the metadata in the OPF file in the ePub. What you have to do to fix this is use the Calibre editor and edit the metadata in the OPF so it is correct. Then KOReader will read the correct metadata.

What you could do it go to the KOReader Github and put in a request for KOReader to read the Kobo database.

The calibre plugin reads contents from the JSON file "(.)metadata.calibre"

For each book it reads title, path, authors, series, series_index, tags and size (as you can see in the code)

That's the info that the plugin uses. No custom columns, no other magic. Just these bits. If you find a mismatch between the JSON file and the results presented by the plugin please report because it is our bug.

Thank you. So to see the bookshelves I created in Calibre, I need to duplicate this information in the series column and then send the book to the device?

How do others browse their books by bookshelves they created in Calibre? It sounds so easy, but in the end, I haven't found a way to make it work yet.

Should the OPF file be in the respective folder on the device? For some reason, when I put a book to the device from Calibre, it only creates a folder and then places the epub file in it, no cover or OPF file.

But why are there so many more tags in there than the ones I created myself in Calibre? Do I have to "update cached metadata on device" to update the epub metadata, so I can see only the tags I created? Or should I select "read metadata of files on device" in file formats?

The OPF file part of the ePub. Using the Calibre editor, you can remove/change the tags and other metadata.

Because some ePub have tags in the OPF.

We don't give a rat's tail about anything that might be extra in the OPF. The Calibre plugin deals about Calibre metadata, as @pazos said.

(Calibre itself might pick some of it at *import* time, but you'd see those in its tag editor UI).

@Jon: please stop confusing users by talking about things you have no personal experience with, it's becoming *extremely* tiresome, and verging on actively bothersome and generally counter-productive. (And it's not like you haven't been countlessly warned about that very fact...).
