I keep a copy of the 1.17 install around just in case an update slips through. If they ever block earlier versions I'll be upset.

I found an old link to 1.17 and installed it, and followed the instructions to redownload my books. I'm now in the proccess of disinfecting 160 books out of 219 and converting them to epub!!!

From now on I'm going to make sure the unchecked auto update box stays unchecked so that this doesn't happen again. And now I can freely download Kindle books and not have to worry about keeping my books, since I can disinfect them from the get go!

It would really be wrong for them to do that since some people have really old pc's. Mine is going to be 11 years old next year, I'm still using Windows 7, unless the pc craps out, I don't intend to get a new pc.

You also will want to run the batch program in this post (basically replaces the update in the roaming file with a blank doc). I had the auto update box unchecked and it updated anyway. Wrong or not, that's what Amazon in doing.

ETA: I'm not the techiest of people, so if you want to know exactly what it does, they explain the thread.

I am also on Windows 7 on this PC, only because I can't afford to replace to all of the software I use on it. I do have a Windows 10 laptop I could put Calibre on if I absolutely have to.

This update has happened even the box was unchecked (I know because it happened to me).

It happened to me to, but I managed to kill the update halfway through, restarted my computer, re-installed the old version, and for now, it stays on the old version. I'm thinking that maybe some flag got set when the update started, and now it thinks it's updated, even when it's not ??? Maybe over the holiday break, when I have some time, because our company is going to be closed for the first time in memory (silver lining to the horrific pandemic situation), I'll read that other thread and understand more about what is going on, but for the moment, I have dodged the bullet...

And I'm being a lot better about downloading titles right away and version-proofing them.

Oh yeah, and I too had it set not to update, FWIW.

Silence Fallen is the tenth in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US right now. I haven't gotten this far along in the series yet, so I'm happy to see this - this'll be one I won't have to look/wait for at either of my libraries!

Small Magics is a collection of short stories and some Curran POV that I quite enjoyed. I especially liked Magic Tests, which is a short story featuring Julie, Kate's ward, who is also about to make an appearance in January of next year with a self-pubbed book of her own, Blood Heir. I've always kind of wished Julie would hook up with Yu Fong, from Magic Tests, but the partially-serialized version of Blood Heir that was on the IA website for a while seemed to indicate that it's going to be Derek, not Yu Fong. (Not a spoiler, since it's already been on the IA website, and also not for certain, but certainly looked that way...) Sigh! In any case, Small Magics is $0.99 at Kindle US only, at least as of right now.
