Aaaah, but have you done it wearing a mask?

A couple of months ago I had to take a plane trip on short notice to help my dad when he got out of the hospital after a minor surgery. The flights had very few passengers so we were distanced, everyone was in masks, and California wasn't surging at the time so it wasn't too risky.

But then on the flight home, I was reading a weepy romance novel, and let me tell you, crying in a mask is not pleasant! I felt as if everyone would think I had Covid-19 if I sniffled. But if I didn't sniffle, my mask was going to be a mess, and totally gross. So I kept taking sips of the tiny water bottle they gave each of us, and surreptitiously wiping my nose when I did.

Never again!

Of course, I'm not going to fly again right now anyway in the midst of the surge, but if I do fly again sometime in a mask, I'm only reading murder mysteries!

Funny. Thankfully I've just been staying home, so a mask wasn't an issue.

On another note, has anyone heard from Blossom lately?

She hasn't posted since last summer IIRC. (when she was reading the Kate Daniels series).

I was going to buy her a book for her birthday, but she hasn't updated her Amazon wishlist since last year. So not sure if she's still using her kindle.

Etched in Bone is the fifth in Anne Bishop's The Others series. A few other folks upthread have mentioned and really liked this series. For me, it's a bit darker than I usually like, but somehow, I can't stop reading it - so I'm happy to see Etched drop to £1.99 at Kindle UK.

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Anne Bishop returns to her world of the Others, as humans struggle to survive in the shadow of shapeshifters and vampires far more powerful than themselves...

After a human uprising was brutally put down by the Elders—a primitive and lethal form of the Others—the few cities left under human control are far-flung. And the people within them now know to fear the no-man’s-land beyond their borders—and the darkness...

As some communities struggle to rebuild, Lakeside Courtyard has emerged relatively unscathed, though Simon Wolfgard, its wolf shifter leader, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn must work with the human pack to maintain the fragile peace. But all their efforts are threatened when Lieutenant Montgomery’s shady brother arrives, looking for a free ride and easy pickings.

With the humans on guard against one of their own, tensions rise, drawing the attention of the Elders, who are curious about the effect such an insignificant predator can have on a pack. But Meg knows the dangers, for she has seen in the cards how it will all end—with her standing beside a grave...

And a little pricier, at £2.49, Wild Country just dropped at Kindle UK. It's second in the follow-up series, World of the Others, by Anne Bishop.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DMZB97R

In this New York Times bestselling powerful and exciting fantasy set in the world of the Others series, humans and the shape-shifting Others will see whether they can live side by side...without destroying one another.

There are ghost towns in the world—places where the humans were annihilated in retaliation for the slaughter of the shape-shifting Others.

One of those places is Bennett, a town at the northern end of the Elder Hills—a town surrounded by the wild country. Now efforts are being made to resettle Bennett as a community where humans and Others live and work together. A young female police officer has been hired as the deputy to a Wolfgard sheriff. A deadly type of Other wants to run a human-style saloon. And a couple with four foster children—one of whom is a blood prophet—hope to find acceptance.

But as they reopen the stores and the professional offices and start to make lives for themselves, the town of Bennett attracts the attention of other humans looking for profit. And the arrival of the outlaw Blackstone Clan will either unite Others and humans...or bury them all.

<Arroo!>

The Others series is one of my go-to series whenever I'm in a reading slump or when I simply want something good to read. It doesn't matter that I've read the books multiple times; I just love that world so much. The series is probably more urban fantasy than paranormal romance, but I don't really mind that the romance is minimal in the books.

For the spin-offs, I love Wild Country a lot more than Lake Silence, probably because it's more related to the Lakeside Courtyard, and is somewhat parallel to the timeline in Etched in Bone. I wonder if Anne Bishop will explore further the town of Bennett, because I'd really love to read more stories about the various characters there.

Not sure how much longer this will last. I just came across this Black Friday sale at Apple for free Tule books. Amazon has priced matched, but not Google Play or Kobo (at least for the few I spot checked). But I picked up the Alissa Callen at Amazon for free just now. The links on the page go to Apple, so that obviously works too (I've never bought books from Apple).

Tule blog

ETA: the titles are
  • The Christmas Secret by Jeannie Watt
  • A Hummingbird Christmas by Karen Foley
  • Lone Star Hero by Jennie Jones
  • Last Chance Christmas by Joanne Rock
  • On the Edge by Dani Collins
  • Away in Montana by Jane Porter
  • Finding True North by Audrey Wick
  • Slay Bells Ring by Nancy Robards Thompson
  • Montana Cowgirl by Debra Salonen
  • A Baby for Christmas by Joan Kilby
  • Insider by Rebecca Crowley
  • All I Want for Christmas by Jennifer Gracen
  • The Farrier’s Daughter by Leigh Ann Edwards
  • A Royal Christmas Gift by LuAnn McLane
  • Going Down by Shelli Stevens
  • His Christmas Bride by Lara Van Hulzen
  • Summoned by M.A. Guglielmo
  • Her Mistletoe Cowboy by Alissa Callen
  • The Runaway Princess Bride by Lenora Worth
  • Falling for Christmas by Kate Hewitt
  • The Courage of Eli Jackson by Kelly Hunter
  • Once Upon a Royal Christmas by Robin Bielman
  • To Love a Texas Cowboy by Julie Benson
  • His Christmas Princess by Kathleen O’Brien
  • Bitter Roots by C.J. Carmichael
  • Their Christmas Miracle by Lynne Marshall

FWIW, I enjoyed the Rebecca Crowley book, though I liked the next two books in her London Phoenix trilogy even more.

For those like me who do not use the Kindle4PC very often, check this thread before starting the program if you haven't done so already.

Grrr! Thankfully I was able to uninstall, resinstall the older version (which I'd saved), run the batch program and it all seems to be working again.

I can't even get K4PC to open any more. I am uninstalling it. I just use the function "download and transfer via USB" to get my books to Calibre. I did have to update something in Calibre because the DRM was sticking. It's working now. But k4PC totally crapped out on me.

Just Say Yes is the tenth in the Escape to New Zealand by Rosalind James. It is free right now at Kindle US and UK. I don't read much contemporary romance, but I somehow got started on this series and really liked it. And I like most of James' other series too.

Anyway, I haven't spotted this one for free before, although I already got to read it because it's KU. Still, it's nice to have my own copy that won't go away if I quit belonging to KU .

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7YAACP
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N7YAACP

Spoiler:
Quote:
Some fires warm you up. And some burn you down.

Kevin McNicholl may be a brutal force on the rugby field, but off the field, the star New Zealand All Black is a famously nice guy. His new tenant, though, arouses more than his protective side. She sets him on fire. Pity he’s evicting her.

Every woman deserves her dreams. Chloe Donaldson can’t afford dreams, though, so she's given them up. Marriage, her ballet career, and now, her beautiful tower apartment with its view of the sea. Her new landlord is kicking her out, along with her three-year-old son, Zavy.

She should hate him. But when a man looks at you like that, it’s so easy to lose your focus.

NOTE This STAND-ALONE romance, like New Zealand, contains a bit of steam. If that isn't your cuppa, maybe visit another country . . . er, book.
