1) oh goody ... now instead of wasting time in Calibre, I need to check out Morecambe and Wise

- new library Default structure, 8 books added, Advanced shows immediately

- new library MY library structure, same 8 books added, Advanced is slower but lag barely noticeable. MY library structure differs from Default having two (2) custom columns

Am in process of adding 500 books to each of new libraries. Will advise further

My experience same & in All 5.x releases. Library +/- 200k

It would be interesting to know if the slowdown happens if you run from source. I realize that this is a rather heavy lift, but doing it would help eliminate several possible problem areas.

The complete instructions for running from source are at Setting up a calibre development environment. One synopsis assuming Windows 10:

Download the "calibre source tarball". Or if you want to be able to run not-yet-released calibre source, install "git" and "clone" the source repository.
If needed, download a program that can extract files from a tarball. One example is 7zip.
Use the extractor to unpack the tarball, storing the results in a folder you can easily find, best with no spaces in the entire folder path.
Set a system or user environment variable CALIBRE_DEVELOP_FROM to refer to the folder containing the unpacked tarball. For more information, see this section of the calibre manual.
Run calibre. If you are running from source you will see an asterisk next to the calibre version number at the bottom left of the calibre window.

Another thing to try both with and without running from source is running calibre in debug mode. Start calibre, click the down-arrow next to Preferences, and choose "Restart in debug mode".

Am now totally befuddled

Repeated testing process with 508 books in each of the testing libraries

Default Library structure ... NO noticeable lag displaying
MY Library structure (w custom columns) ... NO noticeable lag

No explanation for disconnect with my earlier results other than perhaps my sensitivity to what I thought I saw.

Opens in a second for me with 49K books. However, it is a bit slower with the large library, so I can reproduce at least some slowdown.

Can 4.23 be recompiled for your testing with the only change being to use Qt 5.15.0

No idea if doing so even possible

I have reverted to 4.23 as my daily driver which has absolutely no slowness and wondering if the above suggestion would validate your identifying Qt being possible cause

it is indeed an issue with Qt. Specifically the performance of the completions for the authors/series/tags fields. Will need to investigate why it is so much worse.

I did notice a tiny lag with the Metadata Edit dialog opening, but thought it was from a large amount of custom columns on the all-in-1-tab. Is it related to this?

Yes it affects any dialog that has completions for authors/series/etc.

Version 5.3 installed and used for an hour or so. Issue with painfully slow display of Advanced Search Dialog RESOLVED !
