Cyanide With Compliments is the fifth in the Tom Pollard/Gregory Toye series by Elizabeth Lemarchand. It has dropped to $0.99/£0.99 at Kindle US/UK, as a Countdown deal good for about 6 more days.

The first three titles in this series have previously been Countdown deals (making me wonder if I missed the fourth one), but the first is also still at $0.99/£0.99 if you want to try the first one first. Info and links in this previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3856560

Gone (Kick Lannigan Book 1) by Chelsea Cain is $2.99. WARNING: child abduction

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...oreType=ebooks

Quote:
Kick Lannigan has taught herself to be dangerous. She can pick any lock, fire any weapon, throw any knife, and aim a punch at her opponent's trachea. She has also taught herself to be safe. So when enigmatic John Bishop shows up asking her to help him rescue missing kids, Kick has every reason to be wary. He appears to have access to limitless money, high-level contacts, and details of Kick's background long kept sealed by the court. Yet everything he tells her about himself seems to be a lie.

Headstrong by nature, suspicious by circumstance, and a smart-ass by self-determination, Kick can't help but see the writing on the wall: together, she and Bishop could make an unstoppable team, willing to do whatever it takes -- legal or not -- to see justice served... if they don't kill each other first. For Kick, whose interest in child abduction is deeply personal, it's a gamble worth taking.

A Traitor's Crime looks to be a non-series title by Roderic Jeffries, although I can't find it in SYKM. Perhaps it was originally published with a different title, but in any case, it's free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016AKLNCC
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B016AKLNCC

Spoiler:
Quote:
John Keelton, Chief Constable of Flecton Cross, lives a dutiful and honest life.

A loving husband, father and honourable policeman, he is content and appears to have come to terms with the sudden loss of his son from a drugs overdose.

However, cracks soon begin to emerge: promotions have been denied and his judgemental, tunnelled vision interferes with his job and his family.

His fight against criminals and drug dealers consumes him and clouds his judgement as suspicion and paranoia force him to seek justice above anything or anyone else.

But not everyone in the police force is as loyal as Keelton and he is dismayed and hurt when a weak link appears in his own tight knit team.

It becomes unbearable for him to believe that one of his detectives would turn traitor.

His daughter Joanna adds to his troubles as she pursues a relationship he thoroughly disapproves of and ends up complicating his investigation.

Can he salvage his relationship with Joanna and his wife Mary as well as weeding out the poisonous detective?

Or will he be forced to choose between his work and his family and lose everything in the process?

Tense and exciting, A Traitor’s Crime is impossible to put down until the events in the Flecton Cross police station have been brought to their thrilling conclusion.

The Nightingale Gallery is the first in the Brother Athelstan series by Paul Doherty (originally pubbed with pen name, Paul Harding). It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US and Kobo US, and £0.99 at Kindle UK. AFAIK, this was not part of the big Paul Doherty/Paul Harding sale a couple of years ago, and I'm happy to see it on sale - my paperback copy of this is pretty battered!

Quote:
A terrible power struggle threatens the very core of Britain…

In 1376, the Black Prince dies of a terrible sickness, closely followed by his father, King Edward III. The crown of England is left in the hands of a mere boy, and the great nobles gather like hungry wolves round the empty throne.

Soon the prelates of the church and the powerful Merchant Princes of London are drawn in. One of these, Sir Thomas Springall, is foully murdered within a few days of the old king’s death.

Sir John Cranston, the coroner of London, is ordered to investigate. He is assisted by Brother Athelstan, a penitent Dominican monk. From the sinister slums of Whitefriars to the barbaric splendour of the English Court, Cranston and Athelstan are drawn into a dark and terrifying web of intrigue…

The first in a scintillating historical mystery series, perfect for fans of C. J. Sansom, Susanna Gregory and S. J. Parris.

Thanks - the sample sounds interesting. Now that I've bought #1, I'll need the rest (when I get around to reading this....) so if the others come back on sale, I'd love to hear about it again. I didn't "bite" before.

I do see Brother Athelstan titles go on sale from time to time, and will post if I see them. With that said, the first few titles in the series seem to be being re-issued by "Canelo Severn House", not just "Severn House" - although I'm not sure if that's a distinction without a difference. But the Canelo ones are more reasonably priced even normally, at $3.99-ish, which is not great but not terrible either. Or, if you are willing to travel, they are all (the early ones) either £0.99 or £1.99 at Kindle UK right now.

An April Shroud is the fourth in the Dalziel/Pascoe series by Reginald Hill. Titles in this series have been going on sale a lot at $2.99 recently, but this one is now on sale at $1.99 at Kindle US, not at Kobo US, at least so far.

Spoiler:
Quote:
A detective is drawn to a newly widowed woman in this “darkly funny” British murder mystery in the Gold Dagger Award–winning series (Kirkus Reviews).

With his partner away on a honeymoon, Yorkshire detective Andrew Dalziel tries to beat the blues by taking a vacation of his own. But after getting caught in a torrential rain and running into a funeral procession, he winds up accompanying a crowd of upper-class mourners to a crumbling country house.

Dalziel isn’t known for his elegant manners, but he has bigger problems than not fitting in: The owner of the home has died under unusual circumstances, and soon more bodies are turning up. And while Dalziel finds himself undeniably attracted to the widow, he knows that she, and everyone in the family, is a suspect.

“Hill’s high standards of humor and civilized characterization are intact here, and justice and ambiguity are served in satisfactory fashion.” —Publishers Weekly
