I just noticed that many (most? all?) titles in the Tom Pollard/Gregory Toye series by Elizabeth Lemarchand are available as ebooks, with the first couple of titles attractively priced at $0.99/£0.99. (Per eReaderIQ, the first title was actually briefly free a while back, but I missed it...sigh!)

Thanks for posting this. I'm always interested to discover new (to me) mystery authors and these look right up my street.

Hamlet, Revenge! is the second in the Inspector Appleby series by Michael Innes. It is a Kindle Countdown at $0.99/£0.99 for about 1 2/3 more days (US) and 1 1/3 more days (UK).

Kindle US: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B073TZDZGN
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hamlet-Reve...dp/B073TZDZGN/

Spoiler:
Quote:
'Michael Innes is in a class by himself' - Times Literary Supplement

A vast and glittering party, attended by the pinnacles of society, is held at the expansive Seamnum Court. The high-profile guests mill about the sweeping estate. All is pleasant and cordial. Or is it?

As the guests prepare for their amateur production of Hamlet, thinly veiled threats are secretly delivered among attendees. As tensions mount, the Duke of Horton, The Lord Chancellor of England, is killed during his portrayal of Polonius.

With the spectre of war looming, it seems that espionage may be afoot. The Prime Minister dispatches Inspector John Appleby to investigate. But within hours of Appleby’s arrival, he has another body on his hands.

Acting on orders, Appleby attempts to locate a sensitive government document. But as he searches for clues, he finds he may be stuck in a calculated game of personal vengeance. In this closed quarters party, Appleby must unearth the motive to find the killer with a deadly grudge.

Front Runner is the second in the Dave Swinton/Jeff Hinkley series, which is a sort of follow-on/continuation by Felix Francis of his dad's (Dick Francis) horse-racing themed mysteries. FWIW, I've read a couple of the Felix Francis titles and found them to be pretty good, and pretty consistent with his dad's titles (which, in any case, persistent rumor indicates may have been largely co-authored by his wife). Whew!

In any case, Front Runner has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00USMCDFU
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/front-runner-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
British investigator Jefferson Hinkley is back in this compelling Dick Francis thriller by the New York Times–bestselling author of Crisis.

In his role as an undercover investigator for the British Horseracing Authority, Jeff Hinkley is approached by a multi-time champion jockey to discuss the delicate matter of losing races on purpose. Little does he know that the call will set off a lethal chain of events, including the apparent suicide of the jockey and an attempt on Hinkley’s own life. Never one to leave suspicious events alone, Hinkley begins investigating the jockey and the races he may have thrown. But there are others out there who intend to prevent his inquiry from probing further...at any cost.

Two-ish years later, again at $1.99. Links below are still good, and series is still a lot of fun. If you like to read in order, this is the first one...

Charcoal Joe is the 14th and most recent (2016) in the Easy Rawlins series by Walter Mosley. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015VAA7WE
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/charcoal-joe

Spoiler:
Quote:
Walter Mosley’s indelible detective Easy Rawlins is back, with a new detective agency and a new mystery to solve.

Picking up where his last adventures in Rose Gold left off in L.A. in the late 1960s, Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins finds his life in transition. He’s ready—finally—to propose to his girlfriend, Bonnie Shay, and start a life together. And he’s taken the money he got from the Rose Gold case and, together with two partners, Saul Lynx and Tinsford “Whisper” Natly, has started a new detective agency. But, inevitably, a case gets in the way: Easy’s friend Mouse introduces him to Rufus Tyler, a very old man everyone calls Charcoal Joe. Joe’s friend’s son, Seymour (young, bright, top of his class in physics at Stanford), has been arrested and charged with the murder of a white man from Redondo Beach. Joe tells Easy he will pay and pay well to see this young man exonerated, but seeing as how Seymour literally was found standing over the man’s dead body at his cabin home, and considering the racially charged motives seemingly behind the murder, that might prove to be a tall order.

Between his new company, a heart that should be broken but is not, a whole raft of new bad guys on his tail, and a bad odor that surrounds Charcoal Joe, Easy has his hands full, his horizons askew, and his life in shambles around his feet.

Noon encounters the Riker Gang, which is determined to find a missing gold bullion shipment, dating back to the Civil War. Dwarf pilots and naked Indian girls! I love the absence of 'correctness' in these old pre-PC books. They creak merrily along.
