You have to use an old version of Kindle for PC (1.17 is best), Calibre and the Apprentice Alf plugin. We cannot give more detailed instructions here.

Also, be aware that the relevant plugins don't (yet) work with Calibre 5.0, released yesterday

It works very well - I and (I suspect) most other Kobo users here have books originally bought from Amazon in Kindle format.

Yes. I buy my books where they're cheapest (Amazon, Kobo, Google Play, Smashwords, smaller publishers) and read them on whichever of my readers I want to read at the moment, be it Kobo, Nook or Kindle. No problems, thanks to Calibre and Apprentices.

Just a quick note for the OP re the bolded text, who may not be aware of it as a new Kobo user: Kobo's Price Match Guarantee is a very handy way to save money on book purchases. If the same book (same ISBN) is offered cheaper elsewhere, they'll credit your Kobo account 110% of the difference. When planning multiple purchases, I always look for books that are cheaper elsewhere, then buy them at Kobo. Especially with more expensive books, like non fiction, the total savings can be quite impressive.

I tried this many times, but the Kobo website and process is so slow and non-intuitive, that it is usually not worth the time and bother. I find it quicker and usually cheaper to just use Calibre to compare and convert

They tuck it away a little but I've had no trouble with it, grab the order number from the email and a link to the book on the page where it's cheaper and that's it. A couple days later I get an email with the credit.

Easier than figuring out the 50,000 settings and plug-ins needed to get Calibre to do a half decent (IMO) conversion job.

I just click on the clear "Price Match Guarantee" button on the bottom of the home page, fill in the form and submit. 24-48 hours later, there's my credit. 3 times last month, twice in one week, no issues or difficulty at all

I don't bother with any price matches. I just buy where it's cheapest. All my books go into Calibre anyway and get cleaned up thoroughly, so the price matching would just be a waste of time for me.

Google Play is usually cheapest for me, but Kobo is sometimes too. Amazon tends to be the most expensive (my country has to use the US store), so I generally buy only their exclusives.

On my budget, every little bit counts, so even when I do end up sideloading, the fact that the match is 110% of the difference does matter to me - especially when buying nonfiction books, where the price, and therefore the price difference, can be much more significant.

I rarely buy any ebook that's over 10 €. That's something of a hard limit for me. Most of my reading material is ordinary genre fiction, so usually pretty cheap. I do read nonfiction occasionally, but mostly in my native language and therefore on paper (ebooks aren't popular here and many publications have no electronic edition at all).

That's exactly the way I do it: Buying where it's the cheapest.
