I'm still using K4PC 1.17 and haven't seen any changes. But I do worry about it. Since I buy books faster than I read them, I try and download and back them up the same day.

If Amazon hardens their DRM one day, well, I could move to Kobo I guess. But at any rate, my wallet will likely breathe a sigh of relief.

Is it difficult? I've just stayed at 1.17.

I've heard KFX was cracked, but I just stick with AZW.

Check the Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 (and later) and KFX in calibre thread around pages 63-64 for more information.

KFX DRM was cracked and Amazon promptly switched to the next version. Some mention that it looks as if Amazon has 25 variants that can be switched to on the fly. You broke V3, well meet V4, repeat as needed.

This seems to more an issue with text books which are only allowing KFX downloads. Not a big deal to me as long as I can download my books and deDRM them.

If K4PC is updated to only allow KFX download, that's when my Kindle serial number and Download and transfer via USB may come in handy. I picked that Kindle since it does not do KFX.

Edit: Could we get much further from replacements for the Aura One?

I think the idea that you need to stay with 1.17 and avoid KFX entirely is quite out of date.
I use Kindle for PC 1.24.3, download as KFX, and they import into Calibre fine with the KFX Input plugin.
There might be issues with later versions of Kindle for PC.
(Edit: I do then read the books on an Kobo Aura ONE )

On the other hand, updating from 1.17 to whatever later version, what do I gain?

If nothing else, KFX is an iffy format to convert from. It's easy enough to see if you take an AZW3 with the embedded source and extract the source and then compare viewing that compared to viewing the output of decompiling the same book in KFX. Not quite up to the weirdness that can be found when converting a PDF to another format but it still gives some annoying glitches.

To quote the author of the KFX Input plugin:

Quote:
Amazon's KF8 (azw3) format is superior to KFX as a source for conversion since it more closely matches the original format provided to Amazon by the publisher. This plugin has limited usefulness as long as KF8 is still easily obtainable.

Honestly, I'm surprised Amazon really cares. Amazon must be well aware that there's a small percentage of people out there buying books from them that are read on other devices.

I don't understand why Amazon cares more about DRM than publishers do.

In this case, Amazon is likely being pushed by the publishers. As an example, almost as soon as it was announced the new KFX DRM had been cracked, Pearson pulled their etextbooks from Amazon. So far none of the ebooks that were pulled have returned which is likely not good for Amazon's trying to move into the etextbook market.

True. I will admit in the years I've been on MobileRead, very few threads have lasted that long before wandering off in new directions.

What is the nearest replacement for the Aura ONE

🤣 Old Nook owner here. You’re not wrong. LOL

Aside from size, my Clara is an excellent replacement for my KA1. It’s snappier when typing notes, and I annotate a lot. I liked how red the ambient light could get vs the Clara, but having had three different KA1s in my home, that ambient light color varied from unit to unit.

I was forced to upgrade. My KA1s had display and USB issues after they were a few years old. If your KA1 is working fine, I wouldn’t bother upgrading if you like the larger format.

Stick with 1.17 for as long as you can. The problem is the auto-updating in the newer version(s). I'm on 1.17 and I've not been auto-updated or forced to and it still works.

What about the publishers that do not want DRM such a BAEN, TOR, Star Trek eBooks from Simon & Shuster, and others? KFX means that the DRM is added back in. I'm hoping that when the renewals for any publisher that wants to be DRM free will tell Amazon to go stuff KFX.

The Clara HD is not an upgrade from the KA1. The Forma is the upgrade for the KA1.

As for nook, they botched it big time in many ways starting with the really awful hardware. The bezels are really sill and awful to hold being so rubbery and overly large. This means you need a case that's also going to be larer then it should be. Then there is the firmware. It's plain awful.

I have a nook STR. So I do have experience with B&N's overly large rubbery bezel. And the firmware is awful. From what I've read, it's not mcuh better other then dropping the partitioning.

The original, 6" Aura hardware was nice. I can only wish that the Clara hardware was as nice as my Nook Glowlight Plus (which has a metal back and a pebbled border front. Not rubbery in any way).
