Is it too much to ask that they devote a bit more time and effort to making the actual story content look nice?

I need dark fonts (good contrast). The publisher's fonts are almost always too light for me.

I just recently started using publisher defaults. And it wasn't as bad as it used to be. Probably because ereaders are now 300 ppi with frontlights, it is easier to pull off the overly thin, spindly serif fonts that are usually chosen. But seriously do these typesetters ever look at how it reads?? Looking at the typical mmpb I would say the answer is a solid no. It is really remarkable how much money publishers claim for so little effort invested on their part. Quote:

Why publishers have to have hundreds of unused classes to the CSS and why they have to have multiple CSS just for single pages that add nothing to the eBook I have no idea. They don't focus on making the eBooks well formatted. They just care about there advertising page.

My favorite screw-up with fonts is with The Martian. The publisher decided to embed a font for serif, sans-serif, and monospace. They book uses all three types of fonts. But they chose to use Free Serif, Free Sans, and Free Mono. Awful fonts. Way way too light. Not even good enough for an iPhone/iPad. Of the three fonts, the worst is Free Mono. It's just very hard to read. The solution was to dump the fonts. If I was making eBooks, I would always check on an eInk device to see how it looks. I would use a 300DPI Reader and an old 800x600 Reader. As well as an iPhone, iPad, and laptop.

What I do find objectionable is epub creation programs that place unused classes in the text files. Things like <body class="content"> where content is never defined, first-letter-? where first-letter-? is never defined.

I wish it could have the advanced settings like the usual Kobo fonts. Last edited by Gone; 06-28-2020 at 03:32 PM.

And then there are the books that use black text but have a background color or a background image on the body tag. That's when I want to use DNSB's boiling oil.

I've never found an issue with the default font in an ebook. For me, it just doesn't make any difference. I suppose one of these days I should experiment, but so far I just can't be bothered. The only font adjustment I ever make is the size. |

Hi JS, Thanks for your replies. "Svelte" isn't a name of the font. It's a description of one. UPDATE: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/at...1&d=1593450212 Last edited by droopy; 06-29-2020 at 01:04 PM. |

Actually, Svelte is the name of a font. I've attached an image of the font sample. And yes, I consider it ugly.

I was the one who brought up the word svelte (cf my OP). JSWolf misunderstood me. So I was clarifying what I meant. Or, to put it another way, Svelte may be the name of a font, but it isn't necessarily the name of the font I was talking about. I've attached a pic of the font I described as svelte. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/at...1&d=1593450212 By the way, can you please share a pic of a PenguinRandomHouse book page that has a lot of "embedded stupid fonts in a single page"

What?! In all the books I've read so far on my Kobo Forma, there's no background color or image behind the text. Can you share a pic of what you're seeing/experiencing?
