I agree. It is definitely pedantic, considering you have to click the name of the thread Does anyone still miss the old, tiled homescreen? to get to the poll.

I did almost mention 'tiled' in the poll, but I stuck with 'old' and 'new' instead, trusting the title and first post to clarify to any potential voter.

Quote:
My preference would be the tiled home screen but without the absurd "search bar". But, with the current top icon bar and menus. Probably, as it's been a while since I used the tiled home screen and I don't remember exactly what they menus looked like.
Oh, almost certainly the new menus are better. I do miss the tiles, but that doesn't mean I miss the old firmware it was attached to. And yeah, I always disliked the search bar.

If Kobo did decide to bring back the tiles, I would hope they would rethink it and make some changes. I just miss the freeflowing, user controlled feel of the tiles vs. the regimented blocks of the current screen.

edit. the collections taking forever and a day to go into/freezing has nothing to do with preferring the far more user friendly old tiled homescreen and everything to do with that particular firmware. i'm using 3.16.0

best wishes koboy
You really should go with the latest 3.19 firmware. It's the best version with the the old tiled home screen.

I chose What's a home screen? because after using the firmware after 3.19, I'm not bothered at all any longer.

I like that too, and that's exactly how Amazon implements it on Kindle.

I don't like the way Amazon does it. It doesn't look all that good.

On Kobo, the most recent eBook is on the left.

I Loved the tiles. I wish I had them. (I have them on my Mini but as I don't read on it, it doesn't matter). I loved that I could see the 9 or so books I might currently be reading right there, easy to select.

On all the major readers (Kindle/Kobo/Nook) the most recent book is on the left.

It would still be nice if the most recent read was slightly larger than the rest. Like it was on the tiled screen.

What I don't like about the Kindle setup is that the two smaller covers are stacked next to the larger cover. I think it doesn't look good.

As for Kobo, I suggest asking in the firmware patch thread if a patch could be made to make the left cover larger then the rest.

I'm pretty sure the same CSS code is used for all cover thumbnails on the top line of the Home screen. There's a patch to make all 4 slightly bigger than default. I don't see how the leftmost one could be made any bigger than that.

You can also use the Settings>Beta option to enable 'Large Print Mode' which increases the top line cover size by reducing the number of covers from 4 to 3.

I like the stacked look myself, though it does limit you to three books, not four. But then, nothing is perfect.

But even so, all covers remain the same size.

Anyway, I can live with the current home screen. I just think the previous one was better.

Yes, I still miss it. I liked being able to pin collections etc especially. User-configurability wins over "evenness" for me every time.

I really missed the option to pin collections to the home screen at first, but the reason I needed that was because the collections list was soooooooooo slow to load. That's no longer a problem, and the way I have my collections set up anyway means the ones I use most are on the first page. So it's the new home screen for me. Patched, it feels much cleaner. YMMV, of course.
