I read comics on a Surface, which works beautifully. But it is a bit heavy to carry around all the time. I've looked at the Samsung 12.2" tablet, but they are years old now and still run between $300-400.

I'll have to measure the screen but I think it might be bigger than 12". It's kind of legal foolscap paper size. A bit more elongated than a4

That's a good question. Guess it depends on how good the screen is, since that would be its biggest selling point. The ones I see on Amazon are mediocre. There's the RCA with a resolution of 1920X1200. That resolution looks great on my 10" Lenovo Tab, but I think it'll look a little washed out on a 12" screen.

I don't understand what you mean.

To me, washed out means lost saturation, and saturation and pixel size are unrelated.

I don't have enough familiarity with 12" screens to know what pixel count looks good at that size. My Surface has a resolution of 2736 x 1824. I imagine 1920 x 1200 on a screen of the same size will look less good.

I will say though, that my 10" tablet with 1920 x 1200 screen looks very nice.

Now I have my cheap 12" tablet for awkward pdfs I'd like to get something a lot smaller for taking to the beach. This thing really ticks the boxes.

My idea is to separate A4 books from reflowable epubs: use separate devices.

It would be really nice to have a tiny device to be able to take with me camping and read and not worry about running out of batteries. This thing ticks the box!

I think it's better than a larger ereader. The screen doesn't need to be that big. We only read a line at a time.

In fact, why not a cheaper LCD instead of eInk and flash only 3 words at a time for speedreading?

Hi everyone. Interesting question. As I understood it depends on how good the screen is. So it can be both, small or big screen. But if we talk about how it is comfortable for eyes, I think big screen would be better.

I found the Japanese Kyocera KY-01L:

- 2.8" screen
- 47g
- 380mAh battery (hmm)
- can enable adb and sideload the kindle app
- $200!

I'd love to be able to pocket something like this and carry it as much as my phone.

Honestly, I'd buy it if not for the price.

Look at Amazon (Or elsewhere.) at the low-end unlocked Android phones.
Most are closer to 4in but they are much cheaper. Say $40-90.

One quickie example:

As an everywhere ereader it'll be fine. Think back to the PDA era that ran sub VGA resolutions but were perfectly readable as long as you didn't try to read fixed format PDF.

That is the whole point: a bargain bin unlocked phone *is* a PDA. Wireless compatibility beyond WiFi is irrelevant in a disposable reading gadget. Or media player. SIM use is optional.

480x800 4in is the *minimum* available. At $40.
If you want more, there are bigger models up to 1080p within the quoted range. Like this one from Alcatel for $69.

And if you *want* a phone you can still get a phone.
But those go up to $2000 and are hardly disposable.

You can get prepaid Android smartphones for $40ish with much better display and faster performance.

For example, I got a Tracfone deal on HSN last year: $40 Moto E5 including 1 year service (1500 minutes, 1500 texts, 1.5GB data).

Sure.
I was pointing out an easy to find example that can be used as a PDA or disposable reader/media device. Not an endorsement but a sample.

It's not meant to be the best or cheapest; just the kind of stuff you can find walking away from the herd. The exact item will depend on time and location.

I'm already carrying around a 5" phone and I read on that. What I'm looking for is to be able to read on eink and not have to worry about draining my battery.
That's why I'm looking for small.
The bezel on the Kobo mini is big, it doesn't need to be that big for epub and I can't get a very cheap one here either :/

I bought a cheap one from China but it arrived broken!
