Fingerprint sensor page turns?
While reading for a bit on my Google Pixel, I noticed that tapping the sensor on the back is a really comfortable/natural action for me. Got me wondering if there are any reading apps out there that will allow users to configure the fingerprint sensor to advance pages?

Not directly. There is an app called fingerprint gestures that can be installed to map specific gestures to certain key events. Most reading apps support vol up/down and page up/down to turn pages.

You're saying the app could be used to map fingerprint gestures to volume up/down events?

Just checked. Can't assign fingerprint gestures to vol +/- with that app. Good Idea, though. I'll keep looking. Thanks.

Dang. The option to map fingerprint swipes to audio control events is definitely there, but nothing seems to happen on my device. Judging from the reviews, it looks like Android Pie killed the app on a ton of devices.

Seems a shame. I also found the fingerprint sensor on my phone could only be used as part of "unlock", which I didn't even want to test!
I tried a couple of apps and they did nothing. I did find apps to use the light sensor, accelerometers and microphone as a Light Meter, Spirit Level bubble and Sound level/noise meter. |

It's not that big of deal. I'll get by. It's just that for reading one-handed, the volume buttons are a little stiff, and not optimally positioned where my thumb wants to be. The fingerprint sensor would just be a more natural fit; especially if a single tap could be mapped to advancing the page. I don't really require an easy "go-back-a-page" gesture.
I guess for security purposes, it's not really that surprising that some phone manufacturers (or Android itself) would want to limit third-party apps' abilities to diddle with the fingerprint sensor api beyond its main purpose of unlocking. Seems to be something being actively discouraged, now. It just would have been nice is all. Oh well. *shrug* |
