Sidebar: I err, fail to see how an update would affect custom dictionaries & fonts?

It certainly doesn't over here?

I think Sidebar might be talking about a sync.

A sync doesn't actually break my custom dictionaries, either. (It complains about it in system logs that no one will probably ever read, but it's harmless).

An update will break a custom dictionary if it has replaced a default one. At least it did on my Libra. If the dictionary is installed in addition to, not instead of, a default dictionary, then possibly nothing will happen to it (no idea, myself).

@Sirtel: Ah, yes, that does make sense, thanks. Which leaves me with the obvious question: why, then, would anybody do it that way? .

Well, I did it this way because it seemed simpler. And I don't update my Libra very often. Also I have to re-install the patches and custom screensavers anyway after updating, so re-installing the dictionary is not all that much bother.

You can setup the patches so when you install the patches, whatever dictionaries you want will also be installed. I have the patches set to install the better English hyphenation dictionary when I install the patches.

This is my kobopatch.yml file.

Code:
## Works with kobopatch v0.14.0 and later.
## You can update kobopatch by downloading the latest release from https://github.com/geek1011/kobopatch/releases.
version: 4.19.14123
in: src/kobo-update-4.19.14123.zip
out: out/KoboRoot.tgz
log: out/log.txt

patchFormat: kobopatch

patches:
  src/nickel.yaml: usr/local/Kobo/nickel
  src/libadobe.so.yaml: usr/local/Kobo/libadobe.so
  src/libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml: usr/local/Kobo/libnickel.so.1.0.0
  src/librmsdk.so.1.0.0.yaml: usr/local/Kobo/librmsdk.so.1.0.0
  src/sickel.yaml: usr/local/Kobo/sickel

## You can put lines in the following section to override the enabled state of patches.
## The indentation matters! Each override should be indented by 4 spaces. Add to the
## section below. This section can be copy and pasted into newer patch versions to
## keep your selections.
##
## Example of how it should look:
## overrides:
## src/nickel.yaml:
## Custom synopsis/details line spacing: yes
## Whatever the yaml is called: no
## src/libadobe.so.yaml:
## You get the idea: yes
overrides:
  src/nickel.yaml:
  src/libadobe.so.yaml:
  src/libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml:
  src/librmsdk.so.1.0.0.yaml:

  src/sickel.yaml:
sickel reboot timeout (20 sec): no
sickel reboot timeout (30 sec): yes

## TRANSLATIONS ##
# Optional, use only if lrelease is not in PATH and if translations are needed
# lrelease: /path/to/lrelease

# Uncomment the following to add translations (replace lc with the language code)
# translations:
# src/whatever.ts: usr/local/Kobo/translations/trans_lc.qm

## ADDITIONAL FILES ##
# Uncomment the following to add additional files to the tgz (like init scripts or hyphen dicts)
# The files will be root-owned, and world readable, writable, and executable (0777)
# files:
# src/whatever.txt: usr/local/Kobo/whatever.txt
# src/whateverToPutInMultiplePlaces.txt:
# - usr/local/Kobo/location1.txt
# - usr/local/Kobo/location2.txt
files:
  src/hyphenDicts/hyph_en.dic: usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/hyph_en.dic
In the src directory, I put the dictionary and the last line shows the code. You have to know where the file(s) go on the Kobo to do this.

To expand on what @JSWolf posted, here's my method (as I also add Russian hyphen dictionary in addition to using the one Jon does for English):
  1. Locate all "standalone" pathces that come in the form of a KoboRoot.tgz
  2. Get a list of files in the tgz file. It's easiest with command line tools on Linux/Mac, but tools like WinRar can also give you the list
  3. Note the paths. Those are the ones Jon alluded to as "You have to know where the file(s) go"
  4. Extract the tgz somewhere locally and write the mapping section in that kobopatch.yaml

To illustrate: here's the list of files in my Russian hyphenation KoboRoot.tgz
Code:
2013-08-19 12:11 90755 ? usr\share\hyphen\hyph_ru_RU.dic
2013-08-19 12:11 90755 ? usr\local\Kobo\hyphenDicts\hyph_ru.dic
Here's the list of files in Jon's English hyphenation KoboRoot.tgz (you can ignore Folder types):
Code:
2011-10-03 10:30 Folder Folder .
2012-05-28 13:49 Folder Folder .\usr
2012-10-15 06:12 Folder Folder .\usr\local
2012-10-15 06:12 Folder Folder .\usr\local\Kobo
2012-10-11 11:28 Folder Folder .\usr\local\Kobo\hyphenDicts
2014-12-16 18:32 335439 ? .\usr\local\Kobo\hyphenDicts\hyph_en.dic
I extract all files without preserving the folder hierarchy in the dict subfolder under src in my patch directory and then write the map in the kobopatch.yaml

Code:
files:
  src/dict/hyph_en.dic: usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/hyph_en.dic
  src/dict/hyph_ru.dic: usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/hyph_ru.dic
  src/dict/hyph_ru_RU.dic: usr/share/hyphen/hyph_ru_RU.dic
Note that I had to reverse the slashes from the WinRar file report. Had I gotten the file list under Linux or Mac they would already be right.

So maybe I'm dumb, but what exactly is the distinction between
Custom collection/author header title font
and Increase headlines font in nickel.yaml?
They sound similar, and the descriptions both link to the same post, https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...9&postcount=42
Do they conflict?

*edit* The reason I ask is because on my Libra, I can't get the headlines to change size. I've now tested with both off, both on, and only "Increase headlines font" on. "BOOKS", "AUTHORS" and "COLLECTIONS" at the top never change size. With "Custom collection/author header title font" on, if I select an author or collection, their name will be larger at the top, but if I go back, again "BOOKS" "AUTHORS" and "COLLECTIONS" are the normal size.

I don't know what the problem is, if there's some conflict with another patch I enabled, or what, but here's my current kobopatch.yaml overrides (with those two both set to 'no', as that's what I was just testing):

Code:
  src/nickel.yaml:
    Show all games: yes
    Reduce top/bottom page spacer: yes
Custom synopsis details line spacing: yes
Increase Book Details synopsis area: yes
    Increase library cover size: yes
Custom collection/author header title font: no
    Reduce new header/footer height: yes
    Increase headlines font: no
New home screen subtitle custom font: yes
Remove footer (row3) and increase cover size on new home screen: yes
  src/libadobe.so.yaml:
  src/libnickel.so.1.0.0.yaml:
Always show confirmation dialog before upgrading: yes
Allow USB storage even when device locked: yes
Remove recommendations (row1col2) from home screen: yes
    Only show stats SmartLink: yes
Increase TOC level indentation and fix extra indentation bug: yes
    Don't uppercase header/footer text: yes
Enable advanced settings for all fonts: yes
    FeatureSettings - BookSpecificStats: yes
    DeveloperSettings - AutoUsbGadget: yes
    PowerSettings - UnlockEnabled: yes
    Set KePub hyphenation: yes
Don't grab exclusive access to event0: yes
  src/librmsdk.so.1.0.0.yaml:
Images (ignore the Aura in the first two)
1: Both patches on. "BOOKS" "AUTHORS" COLLECTIONS" normal size.
2: Both patches on, went into "Currently Reading' collection, you can see header is larger.
3: "headlines" on and "collection/author" off. "BOOKS" "AUTHORS" COLLECTIONS" normal size.
4: Both patches off. "BOOKS" "AUTHORS" COLLECTIONS" normal size.

Didn't take photo of "collection" on and "headlines" off, but it was as expected.

Basically, "collection/author" works, even if "headlines" is on.
On the other hand, "headlines" never works on my Libra, regardless of "collection/author" setting.

My guess is either something is borked, or there's an unexpected conflict with one of my other patches. I honestly don't have the time to work on it it further tonight (and will be away from home the next few days), but if someone hasn't looked into it by the time I get back I can do some more troubleshooting (like turning off all other patches while testing to isolate potential problem, etc).

This is not really a good answer but ...

Both patches were written a long time ago by oren64 who hasn't been seen around here lately.

Custom collection/author header title font was updated recently to work on fw 4.16 onwards.

Increase headlines font has not been updated recently. I've never used it so I don't know what it does or did.

In the absence of anyone enlightening us, stick with the former
