I doubt he would do it for free. I really didn't realize that he had done as much as he has.

I would prefer if the Dresden Files audiobooks were done the same way that The His Dark Materials audiobooks are done.

His Dark Materials has Philip Pullman narrating with a full cast doing the voices. It's really good that way.

Well, that's an Olde Timey (in the vernacular sense, not a TM sense) radio play, really, rather than an audiobook. That costs some shekels. :-)

Ever since he tried out with Storm Front to get into voice over work, he liked doing them. He likes Jim Butcher as an author. If money was an issue, he wouldn't be doing audiobooks at all.

It's not a radio drama/play. It's the book being read with multiple people. The author read all the narration and the others read the various bits for the characters. There are no sound effects. It's really well done. The only difference between doing it this way and doing it the traditional way is you don't need all the he said/she said type stuff as you know who's talking by the voice.

If you take all the "he said/she said" out of the book, then you no longer have an unabridged audiobook. Also no longer suitable for immersive reading as the spoken word doesn't match the written word once you make an abridged version for the audiobook.

Mid-tier or character actors tend to have a lot of different money streams. It's amazing how many actors do voice work, i.e. radio commercials, voice over and audiobook narration. He might like doing them, but it's still a job that he gets paid for. It's no different than doing signings a SF conventions or guest spots on podcasts, it's all part of the job of being a working actor who isn't a star.

There was a major revolt from fans when they used someone other than Marster to do the first version of Ghost Story. They eventually brought in Marster to re-do the audiobook.

Full cast audiobooks can be pretty good. I've listened to several, but it's a style of book narration that never really took off.

I like the way it's done with His Dark Materials because it works and doesn't change the story. Sure, the he said/she said is gone, but that's not a deal at all. It would sound very silly for a character or narrator to say the he said/she said stuff.
