Ace Books has announced that the next installment in Jim Butcher’s #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Peace Talks, will publish on July 14, 2020 from Ace Books in the US and Orbit in the UK. The book will be the first new Dresden Files novel since 2014’s Skin Game.

I hope that is true. A date in sight. If given a chance to read the future books of Jim Butcher, G.R.R. Martin, and Patrick Rothfuss, I'd choose Jim Butcher again and again.

I wonder. I wonder--a lot--what the sales will be like. Six years is a loooooong damned time to wait for the next book in a series. It'll be interesting to see if people line up for it--having waited all this time--or, if there are more like me, kinda "meh." Or, I guess, not "meh," seriously irritated about the delay in producing it.

I guess you could have an argument about "what does an author really owe his or her fans," and I guess that the real answer would be nothing. An author writes a book, it's released, people like it or don't. Doesn't owe the reading public anything. Sure, granted--but then the inverse argument could be made, that we--the reading public--don't owe that author a damned thing either, least of all our money.

I suspect that at least a percentage of the once hard core Dresden Files fans have the meh response, i.e. they use to be big time members of the fan club, but now they have moved on to other things, on the other hand, it's likely that more people have discovered the series. I would suspect that it's going to make the NYT best seller list.

While checking on something else, I found a reference that said that Butcher signed a 3 book deal for which The Aeronaut's Windlass was the first, so I would guess that unless the deal got canceled, that's likely to be the next book.

He's been saying that the 2nd Cinder Spire book is after Peace Talks for at least a couple years now, at least in a vague way, so while they might not be happy it shouldn't be a surprise.

From his upcoming works page:

Now that Peace Talks is finished, Jim will start writing The Olympian Affair (#2) soon.

Prior to that, since before February 2016, it was:

Jim will start writing The Olympian Affair (#2) when he finishes Peace Talks.

So anyone caught by surprise just hasn't been paying attention.

I hope now that he has settled down in his new place and relationship he starts writing at the previous tempo. His 6 years is still nothing compared to JV Jones almost 10 year break with the first book coming out in 1999 and the 4th 2010. Her name came up on a forum talking about tentative releases in 2020. And I recalled I was following her series till she disappeared.

I seem to recall, so much time passed between the penultimate published one and the last--and how long it had been since I read the penultimate and then the last, that I felt a bit lost when I read it, feeling as though I'd forgotten this or that. I'm going to have to re-read the last few, I think. I remember that so much time had elapsed, between reading Cold Days and Skin Game that I felt like I'd missed a book, somehow, when I read Skin Game.

So, I'll probably re-read everything after Changes, to get my head into it, whenever I finally order the new one. (I had to look up the order of the books, to write this post, which tells you how much I've forgotten about the whole series.)

I went ahead and pre-ordered as well. Hopefully James Marsters will be available to do the audiobook. I re-read the post Ghost Stories books recently and likely will go back and re-listen to the Ghost Stories onward in audio books.
