Tutorial Brand new PaperWhite 4 (2018) factory image JailBreaking

I updated my Jailbroken PW4 to version 12.2., and I can't reinstall the kual. I put the archives on the main folder and type on ;log mrpi on the search bar, but it doesn't seem to work, all it does is search on the book text. Am I doing it wrong? Or it's not possible to do this in this version ?

The ;log command stopped working in 5.12.2

Just got a PW4, 32GB WiFi only (G000T6) from Amazon UK. It has 5.10.0.1. Woohoo!

Now keep it on 5.10.x to be safe. Pretty sure my non-JB PW2 auto-updated from 5.11 to 5.12 despite having the update.bin.tmp.partial blocker.

I did read the PW4 Serial Jailbreaking (OTA updated) thread but don't know if starting with a not OTA updated PW4 would make any difference?

No one has reported a successful PW4 serial port jailbreak regardless of update history.

1) Thanks a lot to all the people that keep working on jailbreaks, KUAL, Koreader etc.

2) Recently purchased Paperwhites from Amazon.de came
with 5.10.3 firmware (8GB version, G000 PP12) and
8437 (10/27/2018) 5.10.0.2 firmware (32GB version, G000 T6)

3) After creating "update.bin.tmp.partial" folder I tried installing jailbreak thinking that factory sealed unregistered unconnected to WiFi PW should have "factory image" installed. Well it ain't so. !installHtml did nothing.

I'm posting this just in case somebody assumes the same and fails too.

After installing 5.10.0.2 factory image linked in the first post everything went without problems. Jailbreak, Hotfix, MRinstaller, Kual etc.


And now I have questions.

It should now be safe to install customer 5.10.1.3 firmware, turn WiFi on and connect it to my Kindle account. And reinstall whatever is lost during update. Right?
And in case I ever need to Reset it, it should revert to 5.10.0.2 (factory).


And 2nd question:
Can somebody please link a thread where the difference between factory image and customer firmware is explained? Search returnes a lot of jailbreak related posts but I could not find the explanation.

I see 5 versions of 5.10.0.2 and 4 versions of 5.10.1.3 mentioned, but don't they all live above the same related base factory version?

Yep, you can install customer 5.10.1.3. You have to reinstall KUAL and any other package installed via update*.bin files.

Customer fw 5.10.1.3 replaces factory fw 5.10.0.2 though so when you reset, it'll just delete your settings, library and ebooks but will stay on fw 5.10.1.3. Good news is you still keep the jailbreak and we actually have factory fw 5.10.1.3 (link buried somewhere in this thread or you can check the Open Sesame thread). Remember to install the KUAL Helper extension and enable the update blocker.

Dunno of a link. Info's kinda spread around over various threads.

Factory firmware was never supposed to be available to us customers. It's only meant for use at the factory for testing Kindles. Hmm, maybe for store/retailer use as well. Can't recall if ;demo mode is present in customer firmware or if it's only on factory firmware.

As you've already experienced, factory firmware contains commands such as ;installHtml, ;merchant and I think a bunch of others meant for diagnostics that are missing from customer firmware.

I don't understand this question.

There's a customer 5.10.0.2 (only available pre-installed on new PW4 like yours so no update*.bin available), a factory 5.10.0.2, a customer 5.10.1.3 and a factory 5.10.1.3.

I reckon the factory firmwares all have multiple mirrors but they all store the same files.

In kindle land "factory reset" does not have quite the usual connotation of "fresh out of the box", nor does "factory version". A kindle reset does not affect the firmware, instead it only restores all configuration to default and remove all customer data (books, etc).

As ilovejedd wrote, kindle factory firmwares are for testing in the factory. The functioning firmware on a fresh out of the box kindle is a customer firmware.

I've read through a good amount of this thread, as well as the Open Sesame thread and jumped the gun in writing good ol' NiLuJe. I did want to make sure that I understood one thing right.

As it stands, there is no possible way to upgrade a (G000T6 Kindle PaperWhite 4 (2018) WiFi, 32GB PW4-32, PW4L) with a FW of 5.11.2 even if it hasn't had a OTA update?

Sorry if this question has been asked already and I assume the answer is no based on the sticky, but I feel like I own this thing that I just can't use until there is a jailbreak available.
