I use Nova Launcher. It's highly configurable so you can make it work however you prefer. Config can be saved and transferred to new devices as well.

If you're a *very* light user and will be getting service as well, the Tracfone prepaid bundles are pretty decent.

Right now, they have the Moto E5 including 365 days service (1500 mins/1500 text/1500 MB) for $50. The allocations are for the entire year but you can top up at $10/500 minutes and $10/1GB.

I Need a Cheap Phone --> Smartphones

This post is for those cheap no-contract (prepaid, carrier locked) phones we like to use for media players. It's cross-linked to the front page.

This is just a sampling from Amazon. Other stores have these models at or above Amazon's prices. Additionally some of the models are available from more than one carrier, but locked specifically to that carrier. I made no attempt to list the same model for each carrier since the purpose of this post is to purchase inexpensive media players and not inexpensive phones.

I'll add more phones to this list throughout the day.

No Contract Phones --- Wi-Fi | RAM | Storage | Display | Resolution | And OS
  • $15 -- ZTE Blade ----- single | 2GB | 16GB | 5.0" | 196 ppi | And 8.1
  • $19 -- Visible R2 ----- single | 2GB | 16GB | 5.4" | 295 ppi | And 8.1 --> details | details
  • $20 -- Alcatel TCL ---- single | 2GB | 16GB | 5.4" | xxx ppi | And 8.1
  • $25 -- LG Rebel 4 ---- single | 2GB | 16GB | 5.5" | 294 ppi | And 8.1
  • $30 -- BLU View 1 --- single | 2GB | 16GB | 5.5" | 195 ppi | And 9.0
  • $40 -- Galaxy J7 ----- single | 2GB | 16GB | 5.5" | 267 ppi | And 8.0
  • $40 -- Moto E5 ------- single | 2GB | 16GB | 5.7" | 282 ppi | And 8.1

  • $50 -- Galxy A10e ---- dual | 2GB | 32GB | 5.8" | 295 ppi | And 9.0
  • $68 -- Moto G6 -------- dual | 2GB | 32GB | 5.7" | 424 ppi | And 8.0

So far, I've picked up a laptop, TV, tablet, printer, cat beds, Amz Prime and collected $180 in free money along the way. Still looking to get some mSD cards, a small BT speaker, and a cheap no-contract phone.

Each year, I set aside some of my credit card rewards money for a toy I don't need, but really want. This year I have some bonus free money I can add to the mix. Right now, its a tossup between two smartwatches for hiking: the Garmin Instinct ($189 at PX) and the Garmin fenix 5X ($299 at PX).

I’m not familiar with those models, but I’ve used a Garmin Vivosmart+ for a couple of years until the band broke a few months ago. The watch part still works fine, but the band is non-replaceable and thus rendered the watch into a paperweight! I tried superglue, but that didn’t hold. Garmin won’t replace it. Otherwise it was a good product. So be sure to check if those models have replaceable bands. If they don’t I would find other options.

These watches are just like regular watches with the spring bars, so the bands are replaceable.

Why don't you just pop the module out and carry your Vivo in a pocket?

The Vivo is designed to be warn on the wrist so it can track heart rate, and that is the main reason I had it. My doc wanted me to wear one. Without that it really has little use to me. It's really more of a fitness watch rather than a smartwatch. I thought about getting a FitBit, but then Google bought them, so no way I’ll wear a Google data mining watch. My insurance company already knows way too much about me now!

Ah, so it did the HR thing. Then sterilize the module with some alcohol, make a small incision above your heart and place it just under the skin. Then super glue the incision closed. Make sure the HR monitor is facing your heart.

Trust me, I'm a certified Monkey Medic

I think I’ll try the standard advice instead, "Take a banana and call me in the morning."
