Is there a maximum filesize on Kobo devices? I created a 200+ MB dictionary and placed it on my Kobo (same filename as the original/pre-installed dictionary), but my Kobo can't see it. Any suggestions?

About the maximum size, I know that a kobo can handle well a kobodictionary of several hundred of MB.

You should be sure that your dictionary is in kobodictionary format (created with Penelope), and have it put in the kobo / dict folder of your ereader

If you are able to install an SQLite editor on your PC (I use the free SQLiteSpy utility for Windows, but there are other options) it shouldn't be difficult to help you to create the necessary SQL command to add the necessary 2 rows to your Dictionary table. These manual additions should survive a firmware upgrade but not a factory reset.

I realise that this might sound complex , but the good thing is that, if you copy your Kobo's KoboReader.sqlite file to your PC, you can practice using the SQLite editor without risk to the real file.
I'd like to use a custom en-en dictionary without having to reinstall it after every syncing process.
I've installed SQLiteSpy, but I have no idea how and what to enter into the Dictionary table. Could you give me some more detailed instructions, please?

  1. Your custom en-en dictionary should be named dicthtml-en-en.zip and placed in the .kobo\dict directory
  2. Prepare the SQL command you are going to run. It will be something like
    Code:
    INSERT INTO "Dictionary" VALUES('-en-en','English - English OED_ed3','true',13379315,'','true');
    Replace the red bit with your choice of short helpful description (or nothing if you prefer)
    Replace the blue bit with the exact size in bytes of your dicthtml-en-en.zip file.
  3. See attached screenshot. To insert the entry for the new dictionary into the Dictionary table
    • Copy your prepared SQL insert command into the top box (higher yellow highlight
    • Run the query (see red circle) via Execute > Execute SQL or [F9]
    • Once run, double-click the Dictionary table (lower yellow highlight) to see its contents. Your new entry should be visible (blue asterisk)
    • Exit SQLiteSpy.
  4. Do a full power off/on cycle to get the new dictionary fully recognised by the Kobo.

I can do all steps and have my (Polish) dictionary installed on the top of the list. Translation works until I choose different dictionary. After it, I can't go back to "proper" one onymore. I can choose oryginally installed laguages but not this one installed by me. I can choose English but not Polish while both are still on the list of available dictionaries (and Polish was used while I openened the book for the first time).
Do you have idea what I'm doing wrong?

Not really, not without a lot more details and a copy of your dictionary .zip file.

As Polish is not an officially supported language the simple 'trick' which worked for LucyOne's en-en English dictionary isn't going to work, I don't think.

My best advice would be to install it as an 'Extra' dictionary by following all the steps in surquizu's step-by-step post. I know it's more complicated but it probably has the best chance of success. It's the method I use for my own custom dictionaries (multiple English) and it's never failed me yet.

If you do decide to try the 'Extra' dictionaries route, please note that step 1 is a little outdated. If you're already a kobopatch user the standard patch you need to enable is called 'Allow searches on Extra dictionaries' If you're not already a kobopatch user then your task became a little more challenging.

I don't have much personal experience with translation dictionaries so if the above all seems a bit too overwhelming perhaps wait and see whether another Polish user pops up here to advise whether there's a simpler way.

Thank you for this link. It looks quite complicated. I'll think about this solution

@jackie_w What is the difference between the method you described above for me and the method for extra dictionaries?

What you did for your 'English - English' dicthtml-en-en.zip file is really a subset of the instructions in surquizu's post, namely steps 4-6. Steps 1-3 aren't necessary because Kobo already knows about and supports the 'en' English locale. Once upon a time (pre- fw 4.8) step 5 wasn't required for Kobo-supported locales but unfortunately it is now - hence the SQLiteSpy necessity.

Kobo don't supply a dicthtml-en-en.zip file so they are not constantly trying to overwrite it every time you connect via wi-fi or Kobo Desktop, i.e. the simple trick works for one additional English dictionary. The same trick should also work for one additional 'Deutsch - Deutsch', 'Français - Français' etc.

The full 'Extra dictionaries' method is the most versatile when you want multiple English (or any other language) dictionaries or to use a non-Kobo-supported locale e.g. Polish (pl)

@Cyfranek, if you're still listening ...

Having just answered LucyOne's question I've had an idea I should have thought of yesterday. With reference to post #635, make the following changes and try this:
  1. Name your new Polish dictionary dicthtml-de-de.zip
  2. Prepare the SQL command
    Code:
    INSERT INTO "Dictionary" VALUES('-de-de','Deutsch - Deutsch Polish','true',13379315,'','true');
    Replace the red bit with your choice of short helpful description.
    Replace the blue bit with the exact size in bytes of your dicthtml-de-de.zip file.
  3. SQL step, same as post #635
  4. Disconnect, power off/on, same as post #635

If it worked, you should see a new line, 'Deutsch - Deutsch Polish', in your dictionary selection drop-down menu.

Thanks for the trick. It works for my Kobo Aura when I add a custom en-en dictionary. Unfortunately it does not work when I add a "-en-vi". It may be due to Vietnamese (vi) is still not supported by Kobo device.
