What's in the Kindle Keyboard update that Amazon says I need?

You're just getting a notice today for October 1st? I'm running 3.4.2 on my Kindle Keyboard. I wonder if I also have a mandatory update (as of yet unannounced)?

3.4.2 has been on my keyboards for months. It just says 3.4.2 or higher on the website. I haven't noticed any changes. The biggest change was in July for more recent devices besides the read/unread option is that it ended the practice of deregistering your device and reregistering it on someone else's account so that you could download their books, then deregister and reregister your device to your own account. Can't do it any longer. However, sideloading works fine, so not really affecting me.

I thought I saw 3.4.3, but I guess I was wrong. Not sure how this deregister, reregister thing works now? Does this mean if I wanted to sell a Kindle on Craigslist (for example) and the buyer wanted to test it by registering the Kindle to his account, I wouldn't be able to use that Kindle on my account if he decided not to buy it? (When I've bought used Kindles in the past I've test registered them to my account to make sure they weren't blacklisted.)

The "latest" version on Amazon is 3.4.2, which I have. Doing a Sync does nothing.
I can find no mention of a 1st of October 2019 deadline on Amazon for any Firmware or device.

No you're not wrong. I'm in the UK and have a Kindle 3G/Keyboard/K3GB, and received an email this morning notifying me of the update:

Dear Customer,

We're contacting you regarding your Kindle Keyboard (2010). If you have not yet completed the most recent update on your Kindle Keyboard (2010), please do so prior to October 1, 2019 or you will be unable to use the Kindle services on your device. I'd like to find out by installing and updating mine but, alas, it's dead. It's spent far too much time, completely dead and drained in a desk drawer, and it just won't come back to life this time. I've tried all of the fixes I could find online for resetting/restarting/jump starting a dead K3, but I believe it's really dead and gone for good this time.

It's actually not hard to pop open (plastic knife etc) and "new" batteries are on ebay. Not glued.
Though I've not tried fitting a battery, I have one from a friend sitting waiting for one.

Mine is just updated manually via download and seems OK. Not got any email.

Pity the minimum margin is still silly big on all Kindles, even though there is 3 settings.

FWIW, I saw 3.4.3 on my end (Amazon US accessed from France), on a new layout of the update pages, with *every* Kindle ever to grace the earth listed each with their latest version (i.e., no longer on a device-specific page).

Given the timestamps in the tarball, might have been waiting in the wings for quite a while.

There's actually an easy "hack" for that on the Keyboards and Basic (non-touches). Just one change in a configuration file. If I remember right, however, if you change the margin via settings in your Kindle you have to "re-hack" this again.
