There's no need to spend that kind of money! If you want water with a high pH, dump caustic soda in it. Probably won't do much good to your screen though. I honestly don't know why you'd want anything other than normal near-neutral-pH water as a cleaning agent, though: the bacteria on your Kindle are just going to be the usual collection you've got on your hands anyway, and you know they don't do you any harm because you're covered in them anyway. (Quorum effects and skin ecology thrown out of whack aside -- but you know what'll throw your skin ecology out of whack? Strong cleaning agents, that's what. And you don't want that: consequences can include things like necrotizing fasciitis, which you should not look up on Wikipedia unless you have a strong stomach.)

Seriously, you can clean almost anything off that isn't actively toxic if you just buy some distilled water (you can get huge bottles for not very much) and use that with a soft cloth, perhaps with a bit of soap. (And the only reason for the distilled water is to stop you getting soap scum marks at the edges). (If it *is* actively toxic... hm, I'm not sure what I'd do about a Kindle I'd dropped in the loo. It would be very hard to sterilize things like the inside of the USB socket without damaging it.)

(IMHO) I really dislike that cover. It has the corner straps which I really dislike. Then it has the strap around the cover. Again I don't like tha. And finally, no sleep/wake feature. It's also a bit thick. So I would give it a miss.

I do my grocery shopping on Sunday morning. I took the case and asked 8 women what they would use to clean it. Four said Oxiclean and a soft brush. Two said to be sure and rinse the cover. I got a bottle of Oxiclean spray, sprayed the cover, let it set a few minutes, scrubbed with a soft brush, rinsed, and brushed again. I wouldn't say it looks like new but I'm not ashamed to read with it in a restaurant while I eat lunch.

Here's what I found on the internet.

"One of the active ingredients in OxiClean is sodium percarbonate (Na2CO3•H2O2), an adduct of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).[3] This breaks down into hydrogen peroxide when dissolved in water. TAED is often used as activator. These ingredients break down safely in the environment and leave no toxic by products.[4]"

Huh? Just add baking soda to the water and stir it to make it alkaline. For drinking it is 1/8 tbsp per 8oz. For cleaning just use a bunch more. If I find some laying around, I will Guineapig it for you .

Okay done. Worked and didn't destroy the cover. I used a glass of water, put two heaping table spoons of baking soda in it, stirred a bit (water looks now milky white). Add in a small pan, add in cover, scrub with a brush. Attached are three pictures. Before, after, and the water after before draining it (yuck). Don't mind the dirt around the magnets as it will never come clean. It is very small metal shavings that the magnets attracted over time.

Thank you, Duckie, and I'll get some baking soda and give it a try. The yellow cover is my favorite but it gets dirty quickly. I have noted the magnet outlines and the OxiClean did nothing for that.

If it is like mine, the magnet outlines can only be cleaned with a much stronger magnet that pulls the metal dust away. Didn't have a strong enough magnet this time around.

Duckie, I just got my sunflower yellow cover off the clothesline. I rarely ever hang clothes on it. Other than the magnets, it's looks like new. Possibly a little bleached but not bad. The baking soda and water did better than liquid soap and water and better than Oxiclean and water.

I took a plastic container that the cover just fit in. I put in about 12 ounces of lukewarm water, 2.5 tablespoons--soup spoons?--of baking soda and mixed it till it dissolved. I put the cover in, sealed the container, and shook it for three or four minutes. Then I took a soft brush and brushed the cover, She soft spine was the hardest to get clean.

It looks great. Duckie, I don't know if you remember the civilian detective named Monk who had OCD. I enjoyed his television show but always thought he was a little careless and sloppy for an OCD guy. In one seasons introcutions he's leaving his house and three umbrellas were hanging on hooks, two facing right and one facing left. He had to change the odd one. But, no way would Monk have ever had three umbrellas. Two or four, but never three. That's me and my yellow Kindle cover. I wish they made another cloth cover in bright green or rose or light blue or even purple. I'm old and when I set a Kindle down in a black or navy blue cover it disappears. How they disappear is one of those of physics theories that Einstein didn't get around to explaining.
