According to the person who took the photo each was set to the margin / line spacing settings to maximize the amount of text on the screen and each was set to the smallest available font size setting.

Yes, the Nook has advantages due to maximum available settings. That's part of the whole picture and why in the photo the Nook is showing almost double the amount of text.

Where do those numbers come from? 25% of 40 is 10 so a 25% increase would be 50. And a 40" screen would be 20% smaller than a 50" screen.

Elementary mathematics. We're discussing screen area, not linear size. The ratio of the area of a 50" screen to a 40" screen is (50/40) squared, which is 1.56.

Everyone has their own ideas of what constitutes a good layout of course, but to my mind the layout of the Nook screen illustrated is far from ideal. The margins are too narrow and the text much too cramped. There's a very good reason why books are printed with reasonably sized margins: centuries of typographical experience has shown that it's more comfortable to read that way.

For me personally, the benefit of a larger screen (and I do appreciate larger screens) is the ability to achieve a typographically pleasing appearance, not to cram as much text as possible onto a page!

Hmmmm.... looking at Kobo 7.8"/8" devices, the Kobo Aura One weighed in at 230 grams while the Kobo Forma (their current 8" device) weighs in at 197 grams.

Are you perchance confusing Kobo with B&N? I couldn't find a Kobo ereader with the weight you quoted.

And lest we forget, the Oasis 2 has a rather small 1,000 mAH battery which helps keep the weight down but costs reading time but then none of the large screen Amazon or Kobo ereaders have the battery life of the smaller models.

Indeed, that's what I did. I shouldn't try to post when the grandkids are here.

I'll correct my post tomorrow.
