I've been away quite some time. Have forgotten everything.

Just pointed calibre at my Kindle PC directory and it created 490 files.

There were 294 books in the Kindle directory, it seems.

Did I do something wrong?

I seem to have many, many 'ebok' and 'azw' files without titles, just numbers and too few files with book titles. I don't know how many. Seems to me it'd be pushing it if there were 294 because the strange stuff seems to be in a three to one ration.

What are these ebok and azw? What do I do with them?

And I remember I used to have to use an add-in to remove drm. Is that still the case?

And I vaguely remember something about a new kind of book format calibre couldn't handle so be careful to use only an old version of Digital Editions or something that wouldn't write in that new format? Is that right? Is that still current?

Could someone please help and just set me back on the right track?

Adobe Digital Editions is not part of the process for Amazon books - it is only needed for epub format from epub sellers

current version of Kindle for PC will download books in amazons newest format, which is multiple files per book. if you can get back to an old (v1.7) version of K for PC, that will no longer happen, so long as you block program updates.

so your simplest solution is to delete K for PC books folder, and the K for pc program, install an old version ( search her or google for links) , REGISTER IT WITH YOUR AMAZON ACCOUNT, and re-DOWNLOAD the amazon books in the old style formats, then import the K for PC books folder into calibre ( with the latest version of Alf's tools add-on installed into calibre). sometimes Alf's stuff glitches on bulk imports, so consider doing them one at a time

Thanks for that, guys. Looks like things are essentially just the same as they used to be.

Yes, my Kindle has somehow turned into Kindle for pc 1.26.0 - I used to have an old one.

So all those extra files are from the screwed up Kindle thing?

Best thing is a major delete of everything in sight and uninstall of Kindle.exe wherever that is and redo.

And install latest alf's tools.

a search should get you a download link for v 1.17

then turn off updates in the program as soon as you have it installed. ( and save the installer somewhere, just in case... I have one saved but I don't think uploading it here is allowed.

at some point, Amazon may disable that old version but it works for all books as at now. If that happens there are tools that can cope with the new KFX format, but why bother, unless you need to. I get by OK with the old version.
i suppose if you have a LOT of books already downloaded in the new format, you may want to go that route. AFAIK there is no bulk download option in K for PC, you have to choose books individually to download - but it is only a single click on each cover.
