ADE 2.0 has problem with KA1

Windows 10, ADE 2.0, and KA1, there is a problem. ADE 2.0 launches fine, the KA 1 launches, then popup says ADE 2.0 has a problem and has to end. This continues to happen even after a reboot.

Fortunately, Calibre was able to load the book to my KA1 from the ADE library.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Any particular reason for you to use this very old version of Adobe Digital Editions?

If not, try to install a recent version.

Claude, thanks.

I was of the opinion that the old version 2.0 was the most recent version that will work with Kobo.com and Kobo devices.

Which ADE version is now recommended as being safe and (somewhat?) reliable?

I've had problems with ADE 2.0, too. But 3.0 works fine.

I'm on a Mac, so I can't say for the Windows 10 version, but I use the latest version of ADE.

EDIT : I have the the 4.5.9 version. On the Adobe web site, the latest is version 4.5.10 There's no way, at least on Mac, to check for updates from the App.

So, I downloaded the latest. Installed it over my version. And got a warning that the App was a 32bits version. Future version of MacOS are supposed not to allow 32bits Apps. It works fine for now.

The issue with the newer versions of ADE is not with Kobo devices, it is when you get the hardened version of Adobe's DRM on a book downloaded using that version. AFAIK, current DeDRM tools will not remove the hardened DRM. An Adobe authorized Kobo ereader will open that hardened DRM if your firmware is new enough to have RMSDK 10.0 or higher.

The only site I ever ran into that forced the hardened DRM with ACS is no longer in business--some sites implement but do not force so older versions of ADE will receive the old version of DRM.

Personally, I am still using ADE 2.0.1.78765.

So if you want to be able to remove the DRM, don't upgrade past ADE 2.0.1.78765. While it still works, that's the version of ADE I'm sticking with.

I'm not sure if you can install a newer ADE alongside this version. And if you can, I'm not sure if the DM Removal tools would have an issue or not.

You can't on a Windows system easily install more than one version of ADE. As for the DRM removal issue, I was able to remove DRM from downloads while testing ADE 4.5.9. It all depends on how the Adobe Content Server is configured using the Mandatory and resource level DRM flags as to which flavour of DRM will be applied.

If you are feeling bored one day, you can check the FAQ for Adobe Content Server at Adobe Content Server 6 FAQ.

I do agree that as long as 2.0.1 is working, I have no plans to upgrade. I don't read books in ADE so the ability to read epub3 is a nonissue

David, with my Windows 10 Home, I installed ADE 3.0 prior to uninstalling 2.0 and all was fine.

Now, of course, I need to decide whether to go back to 2.0.

John, yes, good advice. I uninstalled 3.0 and reinstalled 2.0 and it appears to be working now. I guess 2.0 just needed to be uninstalled and reinstalled
