Not at all. The eraeder and the iPad have been have been big game changers for me. My first reader was the Sony PRS 505 and I bought many books from the Sony reader store. The switch to ePub and public library access has made ereaders even more appealing. I will never go back to lugging around a three pound hardback.

Have you tried giving your friend an old ereader? I think heavy readers don't want an ereader until they actually use one.

I remember that too, my husband had to go to 3 different towns during a snowstorm to find a nook before Christmas. He did find one left.

Yes I have offered to give her one of my older Kindle's, when I got a newer one. She said she didn't think she would use it. Even when I said if I can use an e reader anyone can. She knows that's true too. She said what makes it fun for her is to look for books at used books stores and tag sales. She collects them and then gives them away. So it makes her happy to share books that way.

For me it was never a novelty, it was a matter of no longer reading paper books due to small font size. My ereader, then phone, tablet got me back into reading books again. Being able to adjust the font size is a gift that keeps on giving! Haven't touched paper in 10 years, with no intention of going back.

The only way I would go back to paper is if some catastrophe happened and all electronics were rendered useless.

This sums it up nicely for me as well. Because of my eyesight just getting worse with age, there were many years I no longer read because it was such a struggle to read the tiny print. The ereader changed all that and I'm now reading more than ever.

I do love new gadgets though, but the novelty of it hasn't worn off for me at all. I use my ereader multiple times a day, never leave the house without it, and wouldn't even think of going back to paper books.

My first was an expensive 'toy', Astak EZreader Pocket Pro.
The 'Toy' aspect lasted 1 book. This thing was light compared to a modern paperback. I could change the size of the print. And I could bring more than 1 title with me with no additional bulk.

I'm on my 4th (a Kobo), Previous, was a K4 (I had 2 Astak's)
I am even getting used to no buttons

Certainly an ereader was a novelty in the beginning, and much like a toy to many.

For me though, it has always been about the benefits. It was also why, despite wanting one for many years, I wasn't impressed enough to buy one, until the Kindle Keyboard came along. Until then, they did indeed seem gimmicky, not user friendly, unreliable and prone to broken screens and not responsive enough, etc ... and most of all, too damn expensive for anything like a quality ereader.

That's not to say, there weren't good ereaders before the Kindle Keyboard, just that price often meant I rarely checked them out or were allowed to. At that point in time, you were often asked to take the device on faith, and reports on the web often showed the wisdom of not doing that.

P.S. In short, I had a strict set of criteria for an acceptable ereader, which meant it could never be a novelty to me, when I finally bought one.

I never stopped. I've got this thing primarily for hard to find out of print works on DBNL, Gallica, Archive.org, Gutenberg, etc.

I'm not a big reader, but since I got my first ereader about 3 years ago, I've been reading a few more novels. I tend to read big books, and my Kobo is significantly lighter than even one book. I wouldn't switch back.

OTOH, my wife, who spends a LOT of time reading, won't switch to ebooks. Not even when going on vacation - she still packs a few kilos of paper for each week away from home.

Personally, I am more bored by the way the technology goes forward at a snail's pace.

I do understand tho, if there were more people using eReaders, more money would make it to engineers and the progress would be that much faster.

Right now every year the novelties are mostly around what the eInk screen does (shiny new light!) than a better eInk screen.

There's the design too. I remember my old Sony Tablet S that was very comfortable to read with because much of the weight was on the side of a "bulge" and thus made it super-easy to hold one-handed.

Maybe tech companies should look into alternative designs than trying to emulate what a paper book is.

But yeah, I'm not bored with eReading ; I'm bored with slow-pace progress.

The Kindle Oasis is probably what would come closer to what I experienced with the Tablet S. I tried the Forma in store and was left with a "meh" (I own a Clara for the moment).

I think I miss Sony's readers?

I got a paper book from Harlequin My Rewards since you can't download their e-books anymore. It's just a mass market paperback. Let's see if I actually read it sometime. LOL

The convenience keeps my ereader with me. I spend a lot of time "waiting" -- at a doctor's office, government office, for my son at his job, etc. I just need to carry that one ereader and I'm never out of books.

I think the technology has been pretty much perfected in recent years. Now all that's left to do is little stuff. The point of the technology isn't to please tech fans (of which I am one) but to produce a good reading experience, and ereaders have been doing that for quite a while.
