Turn off Kindle
Is there a way to properly turn off a Kindle? This does not mean put it to sleep and let the battery drain.

Other Readers such as Sony and Kobo can be turned off.

Yes, it can. A bog standard linux shutdown command results in an orderly shutdown and power off. No flags are set that trigger setup upon power up.

You can take a KUAL extension that does that from here.
It's just shell script to power off Kindle completely.

And if you cannot jailbreak the Kindle, then eventually, the battery stops working well enough and you end up with an expensive paperweight. Amazon needs to add in the ability to turn off a Kindle. This is one reason why Kindles are overpriced. Amazon should either add in the ability to turn it off or give free battery replacements for life.

That happens in any case. You cannot turn off the battery circuit in *any* device with a lithium-ion battery, and that circuit is powered from the battery it monitors. This is not Amazon. This is battery chemistry, and safety. Batteries are small controlled bombs, and need dynamic monitoring. Is the rate at which it would go down noticeably higher because of the draw from the Kindle's components? Search me, but you cannot assume that it is.

I'd be fascinated to see if your Kobo worked if you took it off the shelf after five years without use, but I'll bet the answer is "no". I don't see you complaining about that.
