Is it worth to buy a new Kobo Aura One in 2019?
I'm tempted to buy the 32GB Kobo Aura One from Kobo website.
Is it still worth to get a new KOA in 2019? *I don't like Kobo Forma due to its PWM flickering. |

This is an interesting question that I would also like the answer to. This device was released so long ago that I am relunctant to even consider it. How does it compare to the Forma in terms of screen resolution, speed, battery life etc?

For the record, the Kobo Forma uses 1KHz for the PWM. Our eyes are unlikely to see any flickering affects over 200Hz. |

Hmmm.... The Aura One has a 7.8" screen compared to the Forma's 8" screen. Both devices have 300 ppi resolution with the Aura One displaying 1404 × 1872 px while the Forma displaying 1440 x 1920 px. The Forma's Mobius screen uses a plastic substrate so it is lighter than the Aura One but the buttons on the Forma make it wider and harder to fit into a pocket. Battery life is pretty much the same for me. There have been complaints for both about issues with uneven screen illumination. My Aura One has very even screen illumination while my Forma does have a narrow slightly dim bar along the button edge but not enough to be noticeable while reading.

All in all, it's just by knowing the presence of PWM in the ereader makes me kinda uneasy (paranoia ![]() If I would have not stumbled upon the topic about PWM on Forma, it might be my best ereader. Last edited by rbyl; 02-25-2019 at 12:30 AM. |

I think that there's an unspoken presumption in your question that the difference in performance between the Forma and the Aura ONE is so great that it might render the Aura ONE obsolete. I think this is a mistaken presumption.
Hardware-wise, off the top of my head, I am under the impression the processor, battery, and much of the hardware is the same. There's a new LED array, since Kobo moved away from the RGB array to produce the natural lighting colours. The Forma's e-ink screen uses a plastic rather than glass substrate, which makes it lighter and more resistant to abuse, but does nothing to enhance the reading experience. The Forma also has buttons and an accelerometer. The Aura ONE has an ambient light sensor where the Forma does not. When it comes to choosing between the Forma and Aura ONE, I'd just pick whichever one whose features you prefer. On the other hand, if you're more concerned that the Aura ONE will be rendered obsolete by what Kobo may bring out this year, that's another question. I had the same concern last year when I purchased my own Aura ONE until I was able to try out a Forma. This is a matter of opinion, but I can say if I didn't own an e-reader at this point, I'd buy an Aura ONE even with this concern since after using it for a year and finding it perfectly suited to task, I've decided I'll use mine until it breaks down. E-reader technology seems to progress at a glacial speed, so I don't expect I'll miss much in the interim. Keep in mind that any reader Kobo brings out that significantly outperforms the Aura ONE will likewise outperform the Forma. |

Can't see myself upgrading my KA1 for a while, possibly the long term downfall of ereaders, lack of reason to upgrade.
I would only upgrade if screen technology has dramatically moved on. Battery & performance (PDF apart) is fine. |

My Aura One works quite well. The best thing of course is the large screen. Forma has a slightly larger one but I don't know if the difference of screen size and the buttons justify the price difference.
The illumination is good enough, I had some wi fii issue but last firmware solved it. The touch is not very precise, it is a bit fastidious but it is not really a great trouble. I am satisfied with Aura One and, at the end, the answer to the question "Is it worth to buy a new Kobo Aura One in 2019?" in my opinion is Yes. Edit: Now I see that Kobo (in Italy, elsewhere I don't know) will not sell anymore Aura One in its site. But my opinion rest the same, it is a good reader. If the price difference for a second hand ka1 and h2o v2 is $35, is it worth to go with ka1 or h2o? I have a ka1 at home and never had experience with h2o series. Which one has better battery life?

i agree with JeanPierre and ps67 and with every word... i travel a lot with KA1 and see no issues with it. forma just wouldn't fit into my handbag, but is a bit lighter, yes. and one other thing i don't care about PWM, cause i don't have any issues - as davidoff explained. imho if you want to be too picky then you can be picky about everything not just PWM.
