My side by side inspection of my new Paperwhite 4 vs. my Kobo Aura H20 (first generation) leaves me with the sense that the text on the paperwhite is sharper than that on the Kobo. I tried to make the text size and other settings the same, but there could be slight differences. I love the screen of the Kobo, and the size of the screen is so nice. But the text on the PW was a bit better, not a lot, but noticeable. (And of course the reason I got it was for the smaller size + waterproof)
The PW is a winner! Quote:

I first started this three-tier system with my Sony X50s. The 750 was for the armchair and I had two 350s, one of which went in my purse and one, with the bulkier cover with built-in light, was for bed. Since the resolution on the H2O is 265 ppi, I'd expect it to lose a side-by-by with the PPW at 300 ppi. I find it good enough, however, compared to the old Glo with 212 ppi which was visibly fuzzy to my naked eye. |

![]() I'm trying to think of anything with a 300ppi Carta and an IR grid and I'm coming up blank. The Kobo Glo HD, maybe? Last edited by NiLuJe; 12-31-2018 at 12:17 PM. |

My H2O2 may have a lower pixel density than my Paperwhite 4, but the text on the Kobo seems sharper, which I take to be because all the books are Kepub formatted? Even using the same font.

i have all PW1-4 and H2O as well. in term of contrast of text, my PW4 is a bit worse than PW3 which is a bit worse than H2O. from what i read in various reviews, voyage seems have best contrast ratio among all kindle backlight screens including PW4, oasis 2, but not sure if voyage has better contrast ratio than H2O.

I was going to wait til my PW4 was paid off to remove the special offers, but I just couldn't stand it and got them off yesterday. Does anyone else really, really hate those special offers on ereaders? (They don't bother me on the Fire, not that I use it often enough to care). I just want to open my device and start reading, not wait for it to wake up and then swipe or tap to get rid of the ridiculous ad screen.
Has anyone removed that power saving setting, which wakes the device up faster but makes the battery drain faster, too? I haven't done that yet to see if I like it. |

I've never had ads on any of my Kindles. I've always either bought the version without them or, if that wasn't in stock, removed them immediately. That's true of both my e-ink Kindles and my Fire tablets.
I was given a Fire tablet to give to someone in my retirement home and it has ads so I haven't paid to remove them since I'm not keeping it. While I'm looking for someone to give it to I've been playing with it and they really bother me. A couple of interesting items I recall from maybe 30 or 40 years ago: two organizations representing egg growers and hot dog makers applied to the FDA for permission to sell advertising space on eggs and on hot dogs. The FDA turned them down. This really happened, at least according to whichever newspaper I read in those days, probably the Houston Chronicle. I do realize our economy is, in large part, based on advertising but that doesn't make it any less obscene. Perhaps the next thing advertisers will try is to pay hospitals to tattoo ads onto newborn babies. ![]() Barry |

I don't notice the ads really. I leave them on as well to have a switch of the loading screen. I've heard that if you remove the ads, you get one of their generic covers, and I don't like the ones I've seen. Weird, I know, but...
