I love my Aura HD, gotten a lot of use out of it and it still works nicely. The only reason I haven't bought an Aura ONE (been waiting for a solution) is the problems with highlightning. It has gotten much, much better over the years, and if you do only once in a while you may not see any problems. But reading a lot of non-fiction I want to do a lot of highlights, and if you do that, after a while they start to act up and not work (even though it looks like they do, but they don't "stick".). Not being able to trust the system makes it take focus which is a problem.
Trying this firmware it really seems to be much better. It was faster and easier than before. I wanted to really do more before I said it is now working ok for me. Then something really strange happenend... I highlighted a part of a paragraph (like 1,5 lines). For some reason missed the last space + word. Ok, tried to mark that word and highlight it as well. Sometime it showed the earlier hightlight, sometimes it showed it as a new highlight. I didn't quite get it for everything. And then... Wham bam, everything I highlighted dissapeared from the book! It only showed " 005" (the last word was 2005). "Start word word word more words bla bla bla words words word bla bla bla hear are more words. (name & name 2005)" became " 005". I jump a page back and forth, still was the same. This was last night, today when I opened up the book (last night I continued reading another book, did not go back) it all looked fine. All words were there. Interesting... ![]() |

Dictionary problem with 4.8.10956
Like Anacreon and others, I have a problem with my dictionaries since my Kobo Glo HD updated to 4.8.10956.
The side-loaded dictionaries that I need to read Spanish are still on the reader (as I see on inspection) but are no longer available for consultation. I cannot access them directly from a book nor by going to the dictionary list. i have closed down the reader and rebooted it a couple of times to no avail. I have not yet had the time to take these dictionaries off the reader and put them back as suggested above. Any other solutions tested successfully would be very welcome, as access to multiple dictionaries is a very necessary feature for me I would also like to ask if there are now other solutions to allow using more dictionaries on the Kobo. The last time I asked I was given some helpful advice which allowed me to add a couple more dictionaries by using the "dicthtml-en-en.zip" type name to have more than one English dictionary for example. These are the ones that are now unavailable. However, as far as I know, it is still totally impossible to have more than two dictionaries per language using this system and this is extremely poor, given the restricted nature of most available dictionaries. The last time I asked about allowing several dictionaries using more complex names, such as dicthtml-en1-en.zip or dicthtml-en2-en.zip etc. or something of this kind, this idea was rejected out of hand and not given any consideration whatsoever. If anyone can give me an update on this, I would be very grateful. Best to all, Rojofo. |

For those having problems with their previously-working custom dictionaries, I think we would need to see the contents of the Dictionary table in your .kobo/KoboReader.sqlite database to be able to help you troubleshoot your problem. I realise this may not be easy if you're not familiar with using an SQLite browse utility (such as SQLiteSpy).
There are multiple ways to install custom dictionaries. Personally I use the most flexible (but most effort required) method described in detail by surquizu here and added to by myself and taos in posts #15,#16,#18 of this thread following problems identified in 4.8.10956. However, I've just tried the 2 easier methods mentioned earlier in this thread (by those having problems since the firmware upgrade) to install:
As you can see below, both of these custom dictionaries are successfully looking up the selected word. I have also attached a screenshot of the relevant rows (the first two) in the Dictionary table to show what a successful entry looks like. |

Regarding the dictionaries, I just checked for the French - German dictionary anacreon mentioned:
1.) Copy the dictionary file to .kobo/dict -> reboot -> there's no entry in the drop-down menu for the dictionary look-up. 2.) Then add the dictionary to the KoboReader.sqlite database in the Dictionary table under a "wrong" name ("French - German") -> save the database -> reboot -> there's now a "French - German" entry in the drop-down menu -> choose this dictionary -> error: "You don't have a English dictionary installed." 3.) Now change the name in the Dictionary table of the database to the correct name ("Français - Deutsch") -> save -> reboot -> there's now a "Français - Deutsch" entry in the drop-down menu -> choose this dictionary -> no error, look-up works without a problem Edit: jackie_w was a little faster. For me, the additional entries in the Dictionary table survived the update. However, with older firmwares you actually didn't have to add an entry in the database to get them to work. Additional information: It's now possible to have en1, en2, en3 etc. as additional dictionaries if you add them to the "ExtraLocales=" line in Kobo eReader.conf. The two character limit seems to have vanished. This might be because now the firmware seems to no longer compare the two character ISO language codes but the actual strings of the name in the database table. Thank you Taos for this information. At the moment, I don't understand anything about the KoboReader.sqlite database which I have never accessed or needed to get my dictionaries to work.
I will try to understand this and make the necessary changes. It would be great if I could have multiple dictionaries for each language! Could you give ma a pointer to where I might find information about using the KoboReader.sqlite database ? Thanks once again Rojofo. |

EDIT: And I have no idea how to find the dictionary sizes in bytes for the devices. I noted elsewhere that while my 17 dictionaries weigh 112 Mb on my computer (whether on the PC or the devices), they weigh much less as seen in the Kobo parameters). For sqlite, maybe http://sqlitebrowser.org/ as a starting point? Last edited by taos; 04-27-2018 at 01:45 PM. |

I recommend making a copy of the database on your PC first so you can practice running an SQL command. Alternatively, if the above is too confusing it may be worth having a look at the different SQLite utility used by surquizu in the post I linked in my previous post. It looks like it might be more of a "fill-in-the-boxes" way to add a new row. |
