I ran into an InkBook Classic 2 while searching for something else on Amazon. I didn't even know they existed. The Classic 2 is, as far as I know, the only new eReader priced to compete with the Kindle Basic ($80 on Amazon). It has one key on the bottom (like a Kindle Touch or Kobo Touch) but also two page turning keys on each side (looks kind of like a Kindle 4). It has mediocre specs by today's standards, 600x800 (167 dpi) screen, no front-light (which is why it grabbed my interest). It does have Open Android (whatever "open" Android means) and microSD card slot. It ran read DRM ePubs and PDFs, plus a few other formats, including non-DRM mobi. It has a browser for surfing.

Two features that also grabbed my attention was the ability to turn off the touch screen when reading (like the new Kindle Oasis) and (also like the new Kindle Oasis and I think a couple Kobos) the ability to reverse text (white on black). It also comes with some kind of Android market, but I don't know if it's THE Play Store, or some kind of limited custom store. Apparently it can install APKs (it runs on Android 4.2.2, so that's going to be limiting right there). The front-end looks a lot like a Sony x50 or Tx series front end.

Anyhow it looked interesting for the price and it could be used (at least in a limited way) as a non-touch eReader. They also put out a front-lit (InkBook Prime) with a higher resolution screen (768x1024, 212 dpi) and quad core processor instead of a dual core. It also has the "turn screen off" feature, but I don't see the reverse text advertised. Both come with 2000 mAh Li-ION Polymer batteries. Both have capacitive touch screens.

The fact that I haven't read much about these must mean they're not very well accepted? (Don't know for sure, just guessing.) I don't see anything about dictionaries.

(Just noticed they both have Bluetooth as well.)

I’m also interested in the usability of this device (ink book prime with quad core). Someone wrote a review of it here, though often people seem to omit details I’m interested in.

They DO look interesting! I doubt they'd be any more difficult to read on than my old Sony PRS 300, which was fine, I thought.

Perfect for someone who wants a nice cheap ePub device. And if you want page turn buttons, there isn't a lot to choose from any more.

EDIT: I found an inkbook review, HERE. It seemed a bit pricey to the reviewer, the prices must have been higher when reviewed.

I'm sorry I missed that. I'll go back and check on it. Thanks. (I do this too much.)

I dislike touchscreens for swiping, prefer scrolling. I use k2pdfopt to crop my pdfs to the same size, then scroll down like you would in your phone or tablet. Some ereaders can do this, such as NookST and Sony PrsT1/2. But there are times I rather use buttons.
I guess I focused on Nook and Sony and just let the InkBook references slip on by. Sorry.

Amazon is advertising (at least) one InkBook Classic 2 in "Used, like new" condition for $60. Fulfilled by Amazon Warehouse. If I hadn't already bought a billion and a half old Sonys I might have looked into trying one out.

No forget it. Your post was superior anyway.

I would like to know what refresh modes it has. I’ll likely buy one. I don’t want to spend 220+ on an Oasis. At that price the pdf handling should be smooth. (At least.)

The Wexler Flex one has no touchscreen, and is incredibly light at 110g. It is however a PITA if you want to read PDFs without modifying them first. And don’t flex it.

Candidates I come up with are the Kindle DX, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4/5 and the Sony PRS-505 but I presume that there are a few other candidates. Based on the Kindle 4/5 model I find that without a touch screen or a physical keyboard like the Kindle DX and Kindle Keyboard any keyboard entry is a PITA so trying to take notes is very slow.

With their 5 physical keys many functions of the Sony X50 and T series units can ignore the touchscreen but far from all.
OP have you tried the Energy Sistem line of e-readers? One of them has no touchscreen and dual page buttons on each side, along with buttons on the bottom similar to the old Kindle 4.

It’s benefit is the weight, it’s almost like holding a letter. Which is really rather nice, depending on your preference. You’ll forget it’s in your pocket.

Cons, it has hard to press buttons. It reads epubs well, but it’s hard to get PDFs to align properly with the screen. For text only PDFs, k2pdfopt often helps, but the text goes offscreen and page back often sends you back a couple of pages. Battery life is about a day or two. It does not like being bent or flexed. I broke one, and after taking it apart you can see that it is basically glued together.

Kindle Oasis 1 is only about 20g heavier. Pity they never added disable touchscreen for it.
