Thank you for telling. As you can see in the post above yours this is a known problem. The problem of the screen rotation is actually that of KSM and not of Koreader itself.

H20 Frozen after patch installation

Hello,

Hoping someone here can help me unfreeze my kobo. This morning I was in the process of installing the Kobo Start Menu when my device froze.

I have a a kobo H20 first edition, running the latest firmware.

Per post instructions I downloaded "KBStartMenu_08.zip", extracted and copied "kbmenupngs" to root (disconnected, etc..), then reconnected, installed "KoboRoot.tgz" to the ".kobo" folder. Installation seemingly went well, the kobo rebooted and I was able to see the KSM.

Since I was running the latest firmware I then attempted to install the patch, however I was unable to install via the KSM, as after copying over "KoboRoot.tgz" and disconnecting installation began immediately. It seemed to work OK, however upon booting into nickel I attempted to enter 'collections', upon which the device froze (see attached pic: https://imgur.com/a/Y8att)

I am yet unable to do a manual reset via holding the power button and tapping the bottom corners (although I'll keep trying, any tricks?.) When plugged into my computer the power button led comes on and I can hold it down until it goes off. I've also tried using the reset button to no avail.

Any help is greatly appreciated, much thanks!

  • "start nickel"; when nickel is running, connect via usb to the pc; install the patch for Aura One.

Did you finally manage to install the patch? How is the situation now? If the device boots into KSM, but you cannot successfully launch nickel by "run nickel," try to run it by "tools" > "nickel diverse.msh" > "start nickel no fmon.sh." This should make nickel work. However the images of kbmenupngs will have no function. That means you cannot return to the KSM menu with exit_nickle.png and so on. Returning to KSM might currently not be a good idea anyway. Since some of the more recent updates KSM has a screen rotation problem on the H2O.

Do not rush into opening the device!

No, I have not been able to install the patch or factory reset, my kobo has been frozen all day- I cannot get it to boot. I attempted to factory reset for several hours (using the corner tapping method) with no avail except getting it to flash into a blank screen (from the books screen). It did give me a glimmer of hope when it flashed blank, but since then nothing.

The LED in the power button will still turn on if I hold the power button in, so there is some life in it still.

I've been hoping I just have the timing off for the factory reset. I've been following the video here: [deleted vidme link]kobo-aura-h2o-factory-reset.

Is there anything else I should try? Definitely would prefer not to crack it open, but it is nice to know that that is an option. Thanks!

@kobrick: Does a hard-reboot via paperclip (I'm partial to toothpicks, but both work) (the button/hole is on the right of the USB port, if memory serves) help?

EDIT: Checked, yep, on the right, first tiny hole, not the second larger one. The button has a strong tactile and audio feedback, don't be afraid to get in there . A simple click should be enough to trigger a hard-reboot, no need to long-press it. It may take a while for you to get any feedback though, be it from the screen of the power LED.

That *may* trash your Nickel settings and/or DB, but then those are probably trashed already, so... It won't format the device, though, so if you have a backup of those (i.e.; from Calibre), that's pretty much a non-issue besides a bit of time lost .

You can also have a look at this thread that deals with how to initiate a factory reset with the help of an external sd, read especially posts #1 and 9.

This doesn't seem to have worked either.

I copied the script in post #1 from that thread over to a freshly FAT32 formatted sd card as 'autoscript.sh' and tried to get the kobo to boot with it. No response. The power button still sometimes lights up if I try to push it.

Any thoughts?

Running dmesg in linux shows the kobo connectecting as

Product: NS Blank CODEX
Manufacturer: Freescale SemiConductor Inc

This does not look good.
I understand that factory resetting with the sd did not work. Maybe you could do a test, whether the sd card is recognized at all, by making the autoscript.sh do something simple like creating a file on the sd. If it works, you have some means to communicate with the device and try to find some solution.
Once the device is certainly powered on give it some time, insert the sd, and see whether it is recognized at all.

That's... not good. I don't know if anyone ever played with Kobos in that state... Hell, I don't even remember how we dealt with Kindles when we could get them in that state, but it involved custom builds of the usual freescale tools (i.e.; fastboot).

If you're feeling adventurous, the gory details are in this thread on the Kindle side of things (as well as in the Kubrick sticky for a ready-to-use solution).

OK, i've made an 'autoscript.sh' that creates a file, still nothing..
I'm thinking it might be time to put the kobo under the knife, what do you think? I was able to obtain the disk image file from @davidfor.

I think that may be beyond my powers. I think I should be able to just open up the kobo and reimage the sd card. I'll just loose my factory waterproofing.

Reimaging seems to be the only remaining possibility. Before doing this, I would read all the relevant posts I can find on this forum to learn about the difficulties in order to minimize the risks.
Would you mind making a copy of your current sd for later inspection? Would be interesting to see what exactly might have happened. Since there is personal information contained, I would not recommend to offer public access to the image however.
