Voyage fan - worth the upgrade?

Hi Fizziwater, dug out my log in details in order to respond to your post. I really like my Voyage. It took far longer than I want to remember, but I eventually found a great, leather, book-type case which is comfortable to use lying down on my side before I drop off to sleep.

I need a new one - pin holes, screen glitches and it sometimes thinks it's plugged into a computer. I was intending to pick up a new one over Black Friday.

New Oasis - seems clumsy to use, to me. I wish I could handle one to get an idea. So I'm really intrigued when you say it feels lighter - even if that is just a perception.

Could you, or anyone else who liked the Voyage, tell me which is more comfortable to hold, one handed, lying on one's side, reading yourself to sleep?

I do like the idea of the larger storage, Audible integration, and I really like the inversion option. But it looks big in YouTube videos, tablet-like with the aluminium back, clumsily square, heavy. In reality, is it as comfortable to hold as the Voyage please?

Also, people seem to be having a problem with the case not holding the device well - I'd really like to hear from anyone with a leather case re how secure it is. I have seen the Cover thread, but specifically: Could I put it in a bag for example, and be sure it wouldn't slide out? The Voyage origami was, I personally thought, 'orrible. I tried one and it just kept flicking open slightly in a handbag and turning the device on. And it was floppy and I don't want to use a cover as a stand. Is the new cover easier to use as a book cover please? If you are reading on public transport, one handed, cover folded back, in a bit of a crowd, can you be confident the magnets will hold the two together?

I've budgeted to buy a new Voyage end of the month, but if the same dosh could be put to the Oasis i'd be fine with that, if only I could be sure the form factor felt comfortable. Not easy for me to send stuff back to Amazon. No printer and travel out of the country a lot. I'd need to be fairly sure it would work.

Sorry for long post. Would really appreciate insight. Harry, if you have a moment, I'd love to hear what you think. If I remember correctly, you liked the Voyage - no?
Thanks,
A

The Oasis, because most of the weight is concentrated in the "bulge" that you hold, rather than it being spread out. It's like holding a thin bar of a given weight, rather than a sheet of the same weight where the weight is spread out.

My leather case was loose at first, but now it's fine. I think it takes a day or so for the case to mould itself to the shape of the device, so the magnets attach firmly.

Thanks Harry. Also for your post re batch downloads. The additional width (comp.with Voyage) doesn't worry you? I wish somewhere in Brighton stocked the darn thing.

Flush screen looks great, but it's good example of form over function. I might try getting used too reading in landscape, but even getting past the 'alienes,' the lines would be *way* wider than efficient reading length.
Oh, my gosh, yes! I thought it would be awkward, but I'm finding it more awkward than I even expected.

My two main readers now are Aura One and New Oasis. New Oasis I carry with me in the bag, in Merlot leather cover and I use it during the day (for nonfiction reading with many highlights and dictionary use, where Aura One fails at all levels). Merlot leather cover holds Oasis very good, I didn't have any problem with magnets, it never slipped out of case. I also use the cover for making it stand on the table to read, the cover seems tilted when I use it but the Oasis seems straight and I read very comfortably. I just read on Tokyo metro train today, very enjoyable.
I do not have Voyage, only PWs and original Oasis (apart from Kobos).
When I hold Oasis in my left hand, I sometimes incidentally turn pages forward, but if I turn it 180 degrees (so that my left hand holds the bezel with buttons, where text turns 180 degrees as well), I have no problems at all and read comfortably. So when I hold Oasis in my left hand I just hold the button side in my left hand.

Question for Harry--and anyone else who likes the Voyage haptic buttons...

I really like the haptic page turn buttons on my Voyage. I know there are several people who didn't like them, but I'd like to hear from anyone who does like them and has now purchased a new Oasis. Could you compare functionality of the Voyage buttons to the Oasis butons? Which do you prefer (if either) and why?

Thanks!

I have wondered about this too, and am also a big fan of the Voyage haptic buttons. In particular, are the buttons more clicky or more squishy?

I prefer the buttons on the Oasis. I have small hands and switched it so the bottom button is forward and it's at the exact height for me. The Oasis buttons are much easier to use. I found the Voyage haptic buttons awkward to press, I had to really push down to get them to work but the Oasis buttons are just a tap and the page turns. So much easier.

The Oasis buttons are more clicky, but it’s a positive “metallic” click, not a soft squishy click. I like them just as much as the Voyage’s haptic sensors (which I like a lot).

I, too, prefer the buttons on the Oasis to the Voyage's page press, for much the same reason as Josie. Even with the pressure setting on low on the Voyage, I really have to squeeze hard to get the page to turn. Probably a small hand thing.

I like that with the Oasis, I can rest my thumb on the page turn button and then easily press it when I'm ready to move to the next page. I've never accidentally turned a page holding it this way, yet it doesn't take much force to press the button.

Oh, and like Josie, I switched the buttons so that the bottom one is forward. It fits my hand perfectly that way.

I am a big fan of the haptic buttons on the Voyage. The new oasis is taking some getting used to. When I first used it I did not like them (the buttons) at all. After a week, I do like the buttons a lot.

The trouble I had with the Voyage buttons was I was never sure where I had to press, I was often not placing my thumb correctly over the pressure sensor switch. This ended up being a distraction during reading, as I had to check my thumb positioning.

I still enjoy the clean design of the haptic page press of my Voyage and was surprised to find I also like the buttons on the Oasis 2. As they are two entirely different devices the respective page turning methods compliment each device. I very much like them both!

Thanks for all the feedback on the Voyage vs Oasis buttons...I'm inching a little closer to buying an Oasis. I love the haptic buttons my Voyage and was afraid that the page turn buttons on the Oasis wouldn't live up to my expectations.

I think the buttons on the new Oasis are loud enough to maybe bother other people in a quiet environment.

They also sometimes make my thumb a little sore. I would have preferred them to be wider to spread the pressure more.

If they were quieter and spread out the force more, I would prefer the Oasis buttons. As it is, I prefer paging on the Voyage.
