Voyage fan - worth the upgrade?
Quote:
I need a new one - pin holes, screen glitches and it sometimes thinks it's plugged into a computer. I was intending to pick up a new one over Black Friday. New Oasis - seems clumsy to use, to me. I wish I could handle one to get an idea. So I'm really intrigued when you say it feels lighter - even if that is just a perception. Could you, or anyone else who liked the Voyage, tell me which is more comfortable to hold, one handed, lying on one's side, reading yourself to sleep? I do like the idea of the larger storage, Audible integration, and I really like the inversion option. But it looks big in YouTube videos, tablet-like with the aluminium back, clumsily square, heavy. In reality, is it as comfortable to hold as the Voyage please? Also, people seem to be having a problem with the case not holding the device well - I'd really like to hear from anyone with a leather case re how secure it is. I have seen the Cover thread, but specifically: Could I put it in a bag for example, and be sure it wouldn't slide out? The Voyage origami was, I personally thought, 'orrible. I tried one and it just kept flicking open slightly in a handbag and turning the device on. And it was floppy and I don't want to use a cover as a stand. Is the new cover easier to use as a book cover please? If you are reading on public transport, one handed, cover folded back, in a bit of a crowd, can you be confident the magnets will hold the two together? I've budgeted to buy a new Voyage end of the month, but if the same dosh could be put to the Oasis i'd be fine with that, if only I could be sure the form factor felt comfortable. Not easy for me to send stuff back to Amazon. No printer and travel out of the country a lot. I'd need to be fairly sure it would work. Sorry for long post. Would really appreciate insight. Harry, if you have a moment, I'd love to hear what you think. If I remember correctly, you liked the Voyage - no? Thanks, A Last edited by Pangolin; 11-07-2017 at 06:20 AM. Thanks Harry. Also for your post re batch downloads. The additional width (comp.with Voyage) doesn't worry you? I wish somewhere in Brighton stocked the darn thing.

I do not have Voyage, only PWs and original Oasis (apart from Kobos). When I hold Oasis in my left hand, I sometimes incidentally turn pages forward, but if I turn it 180 degrees (so that my left hand holds the bezel with buttons, where text turns 180 degrees as well), I have no problems at all and read comfortably. So when I hold Oasis in my left hand I just hold the button side in my left hand. Last edited by Lady Stardust; 11-07-2017 at 11:46 AM. |

Question for Harry--and anyone else who likes the Voyage haptic buttons...
I really like the haptic page turn buttons on my Voyage. I know there are several people who didn't like them, but I'd like to hear from anyone who does like them and has now purchased a new Oasis. Could you compare functionality of the Voyage buttons to the Oasis butons? Which do you prefer (if either) and why? Thanks! |

The Oasis buttons are more clicky, but it’s a positive “metallic” click, not a soft squishy click. I like them just as much as the Voyage’s haptic sensors (which I like a lot).

I, too, prefer the buttons on the Oasis to the Voyage's page press, for much the same reason as Josie. Even with the pressure setting on low on the Voyage, I really have to squeeze hard to get the page to turn. Probably a small hand thing.
I like that with the Oasis, I can rest my thumb on the page turn button and then easily press it when I'm ready to move to the next page. I've never accidentally turned a page holding it this way, yet it doesn't take much force to press the button. Oh, and like Josie, I switched the buttons so that the bottom one is forward. It fits my hand perfectly that way. |

The trouble I had with the Voyage buttons was I was never sure where I had to press, I was often not placing my thumb correctly over the pressure sensor switch. This ended up being a distraction during reading, as I had to check my thumb positioning.

I still enjoy the clean design of the haptic page press of my Voyage and was surprised to find I also like the buttons on the Oasis 2. As they are two entirely different devices the respective page turning methods compliment each device. I very much like them both!

Thanks for all the feedback on the Voyage vs Oasis buttons...I'm inching a little closer to buying an Oasis. I love the haptic buttons my Voyage and was afraid that the page turn buttons on the Oasis wouldn't live up to my expectations.

I think the buttons on the new Oasis are loud enough to maybe bother other people in a quiet environment.
They also sometimes make my thumb a little sore. I would have preferred them to be wider to spread the pressure more. If they were quieter and spread out the force more, I would prefer the Oasis buttons. As it is, I prefer paging on the Voyage. |
