Can I read mobi from a Kobo?
Yes, Kobo supports MOBI. But, I recommend converting to ePub. The MOBI support is basic, and the calibre makes the conversion so easy, it's pretty much pointless to use MOBI. Plus, you will need to convert any other Kindle format, so you might as well do them all.

I have been looking on the internet on reviews on the Kobo ereader and they mentioned that it is in Canada (I am in the US) and the ereader is hard to return, plus shipping is paid by the consumer. Do you find this true?

Sorry, no idea. All my Kobo devices have been bought in stores in Australia. That's about ten for myself and family members. Two of them have been faulty. I took them back to the store the next day and exchanged them with no problems. Kobo was not involved, and, under the consumer protection laws in Australia, Kobo has absolutely no say or presence in the transaction and replacement.

I just called their 800 number and she did tell me they would print a label, but only if it was delivered broken. Maybe my Kindle doesn't look so bad

If you order from Chapters, you do pay shipping, but because they charge you in Canadian dollars, you will end up saving money because of the exchange rate,

They were faulty when you bought them, or they subsequently developed faults? A 20% failure rate is not good!

One had the bright spots that plagued the early front-lit devices. For the other, the touch stopped working after a day.

And I counted properly, and it's 12 all up. Still not a very good failure rate.

I am used to the Kindle Paperwhite. I wasn’t aware that the Kobo ereader had the ability to add an app

KOReader or Coolreader can be installed. But, the methods isn't really "adding an app". But, it isn't "rooting" the reader either.
