Version 3.9 is buggy and two requests for new features

I upgraded to v3.9 the other day, had several new problems, and had to downgrade back to v3.8. I remember one of the problems was bleeding of text in some of the documents that were on top of other text. I could tell the software was not stable almost right away.

There are some features I would love to see in Calibre:

1) Add a setting in the conversion process where I can set the default settings for the left and right margins. I much prefer 35px over 5pt, so I've been editing many epub files to change those settings. It's a long, tedious process, when it could be so much easier if I could change that one setting and convert the files. Many publishers are using this setting now, and it's much easier to read a book when the text is not spread all the way to both sides of the e-reader.

2) When merging many epub files with different sub-folders and levels, the search function for "All style files" doesn't work. It only works at the folder level for the current file that is open, so I have to open a file from each book and manually open that book's stylesheet and manually edit the appropriate body or calibre rule to change the left and right margins. I would love to see the search function search (and replace) ALL style files that are in the various subfolder levels.

Thank you for a great program!

You need to give some more details. Where are you seeing this happening? What did you do to get to that point? From what you have said, I have no idea whether you are talking about the main calibre window or a dialog, the viewer or you have done a conversion and are reading the book on some device.

You can set the default conversion options via the preferences. That does include options to set the margins.

Sorry, I realize I didn't give enough details about the problems I had while using v3.9. At the time, I had no idea I would be posting here about the problems.

What I remember is that I was editing a file using the Edit Book feature and I saw text on top of other text in the main editor window. I was doing nothing unusual at the time but just editing the file.

I've looked and looked in the Conversion Preferences and have not been able to find where you can change the default of: margin: 0 5pt; to some other setting. I'd appreciate any further details about where this setting is.

I would love to see the default changed to: margin: 0 40px; so there is more blank space on both sides. Reading an ebook with the paragraphs almost flush with both sides of the reader is very annoying.

Thank you!

I use the editor frequently, and haven't seen any problems that sound like that. Or had any other problems with the editor.

It is Preferences->Conversion Common options-> Page setup. On the right you can set the default margins for future new conversions. The same options are there for an individual conversions.

OMG! I have never seen those boxes over at the right in Page Setup, even though I have looked many times all over in the Preferences! Thank you very, very much!
