don't be. i did pre-ordered as well, replacing my voyage. the larger screen, water proofing, and aluminum casing convinced me. i also got just the wifi in 8 gb. no need for cellular as i do not purchase books on impulse and i do not intend to use it for audible.

Now, Now, nothing to be ashamed of if you can afford to satisfy a wholesome pleasure. Just think how excited you are going to be when you open the box. :-)

Of course, there are adapters. But, you get none of the benefits of USB C. There are still mid-range cell phones on the market with USB micro but that system was introduced ten years ago. It's old.

Rapid charge, faster data transfer, and a plug that works either way you put it in are nice.

USB came in 1995. USB mini showed up in 2000. USB micro--what Kindle uses--showed up in 2007. USB C was introduced in 2013.

When I got my first USB C device it was a pain. But, I came to like the rapid charge and the faster data transfer. And plugging in without considering which side is up, or in the dark, was a nice. Of course, I still have some USB micro cables. Have to, for my Kindles, don't I?

But, I suspect some day even Amazon Kindle will move to USB C. Probably two years after USB D are introduced.

He travels for a living, and if he accidentally leaves his cable in a hotel room or on the jobsite, he can't just go into a convenience store and buy a new cable. He has dozens of micro USB cables, but the only place he can find USB C is either Amazon or Best Buy.

That's all true. Change is uncomfortable, briefly. Me? I bought adapters for about $3 that convert the obnoxious USB micro plug to a USB C plug. Other than convenience in plugging it in, you lose all the benefits but you keep the convenience of all of your old cables. Of course, once you use rapid charge and faster data transfer the new cables seem to be a minor issue.

And the day is near when one charger, one cable, will charge your laptop, your Chromebook, your phone, your tablet. your earphones, your Bluetooth earphones and that cable will be USB C.

I am not an engineer. My cell phone has USB C and charges rapidly. My Chromebook has USB C and downloads files quickly. My Chromebook also charges quickly. So, why is it that a Kindle Oasis can't be built with USB C and rapid charge?

As for data transfer, Kindle is selling a 32Gb option for the Oasis to accomodate audio books. That means downloading larger files, doesn't it? So, why is it everything except Kindles can have higher data transfer with USB C?

Just curious. Perhaps Kindles are at a dead end and Amazon Kindle can move ehead.

You are not alone in placing an order as you can see! I don't feel guilty. I have about five ways to justify it.

It will charge faster from a computer because USB 3 allow more current.

USB C has little market penetration at this point. Faster charging and data transfer require upgraded components, which confer little benefit for the Kindle’s purpose in life, and would probably make them more expensive (because Amazon might have to include a charger or adapter to avoid frustrating the 95% of people who don’t yet have USB C in their lives). If they are still making Kindles two years from now then maybe.

I would not assume very many people are going to be happy using Kindle for audiobooks. People may have other reasons for wanting 32GB, but in a world where 80% have smartphones, that is a far superior device in multiple ways. Audible on Kindle feature is just advertisement for Audible. They did this before, it was no match for even the cheapest MP3 player and was more costly besides. It’s physically never been optimal and the software will remain far more limited than Audible app on any other platform. That doesn’t mean people won’t buy one thinking they will use Audible on it - they are just wrong.

I know I’ve said if I get the new Oasis I’ll get 32GB but it is totally irrational on my part, I don’t have any good reason other than the usually reliable heuristic that ‘the base model doesn’t have enough storage’. Others may have a real use case (they read manga a lot or have large caches of ebooks carefully hoarded and like the idea of having that on device for some reason). Not me.

I do hope to use the Oasis for whispersync audiobooks but if not paying the extra £30 for 4 times the storage was a no brainier. I'm buying the wifi version as I also have nearly 1000 personal document ebooks in my Amazon Cloud and plan to download those, and all my Amazon ebooks, to my device.

i was curious enough to go look for trade in options on older kindles but that seems to be a USA only thing ?
I can bring up trade ins as a dept. at amazon.co.uk but every item shown is saying no trade ins available
and if you try to sell an old kindle or kindle case on amazon market place they take 40% commission

And how many people plug their Kindle into the computer to charge? It's actually rather inconvenient. as you are then stuck where the computer is. Also, a USB-C port on a Kindle is only useful if you have a USB-C port on the computer.

You'd need a computer with USB-C. Do you have one? Most of the time people will download these audiobooks via WiFi and that's the limiting factor, not the type of USB port. Kindle's do not have 802.11ac and that would make it faster for more people than a USB-C port.

I charge mine from my computer all the time. I know when the battery is low and don't wait for it to run down before I plug it in for a charge. I think this is fairly common ...

Jon, are you thinking of buying an Oasis?

Nope. But I might have bought a 7" Voyage as a Christmas gift if such existed.
