But If I'm going to pay for online storage, I think I will likely go with Microsoft. My reasoning will only be of interest to photographers though. My Photo DAM tool, ACDSee supports OneDrive at the root level, which means OneDrive functions (from within ACDSee) as an external HD, no sync program required, and no special folder on the HD. It's REALLY convenient when managing digital assets. The subscription included to Microsoft Office is not much of an incentive to me, but it might be to others. The TANSTAAFL principle still applies. These companies are doing it for our benefit, they are doing it for theirs. The amount of information these companies can glean from us from our storage habits and turn into cash is simply astounding. Last edited by GlenBarrington; 08-23-2017 at 08:13 AM. |

True, I can't store huge zip files, but I can span those files across 250 mb volumes, and I can't store completed videos, but I don't use it for that. I make it a point to not own videos, and I store my own created videos on Techsmiths Screencast.com and on an external drive. For me, it works. |

I haven't fallen in love with enough of my digital media, apparently.
![]() The amount of files/documents I care about enough to back up (online or locally) will probably never exceed the various "free" limitations that are offered. But then I'm not a packrat of physical things either. I'd rather throw it away now and save the space, than hoard it for years for the one time I may want to use it. |

Office 365 family is $99/year. Up to 5 'users', 1TB each OneDrive. Plus Office for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, browser. I have stuff in DropBox and Google Drive also but am more or less maxed out on free tier there.

I guess I'll just wait for the cost of cloud storage to drop some more. |

I saw upthread that you made some estimates about lifetime reading and I think you are way off. I am only a moderate reader by MobileRead standards, and I have around 1500 "books" in my to-read pile, and 11,000 (5GB or so) in my read pile. I think in my particular case, the numbers might be skewed by older material (either short stories from the pulps, or else novels from the time when 150 pages made a decent paperback) but regardless, I find that if I keep more than 100-200 books on my reader it's hard to browse for something to read next. Page flipping through the library takes so long that I run out of time before I've even chosen the book haha. I can't imagine the pain of keeping my entire library on device. And as far as keeping a local copy of everything, I completely agree with you. Even if the book store or publisher doesn't go out of business, sometimes the rights will change and you will no longer be allowed to download something you bought (this has happened to me from Baen and Sony that I remember more recently). I've got ~1200 books on my ereader. It's not a pain to browse because it's organized into only 12 pages of authors plus 1 page of not yet categorized. 13 pages is not a lot to page through. I sure wish I could have standard window folders though. I would love to have a genre-author-series set up. Biggest pain about DRM. No third party readers with software by someone who knows how to organize data to make it convenient to find. I'd give up all the features I never use like Xray, ect for better organization and more storage. Preferably with Calibre built in.

Why do some people matter about what other people do?
And why do they trying to convince them, that their way is the only right one? Why can't you imagine that many people like it to wear a whole library in the pocket? Ebookreader make it possible. Quote:

Sorry, not true. Kobo and Goodreads user. And Amazon doesn't know what I'm reading (more than others) ans my Goodreads account and Amazon account are not linked. So, yes, at everybody his or her own, but no need of saying wrong things,
