I buy an external drive once, while I pay for cloud backup each month as long as I want to store files there.

Really? I just had one so I disagree with that principal.

On topic, Dropbox that I use is free. I was lucky to Max out my referrals and get in on a few promos. I have 21GB for free for several years now.

It may have been easier to remember with physical books because you saw the cover and title every time you picked up the book. I have thought it would be nice for an ereader to show the cover for a couple of seconds before going to where you left off. I think uBook for pocket pcs had this option.
Also, some paper books have the title of the book and author's name printed at the top of each page.

Same, I have 22.5 GB free at DropBox and 50GB free at Box (and whatever OneDrive and Google Drive offer, although I don't store much there). I do pay $0.99 a month for 50GB in iCloud (although I've never stored books there). Of course that free space is only free at the whim of the providers, but I don't totally rely on it and definitely appreciate the convenience.

I have my library on my laptop, on my iPad, on my Aura HD, on a flash drive and on an external HD. I also have a copy of all my books in Box. Between those I feel pretty secure and having it in DropBox sure adds to the convenience when I want to quick grab something for my phone when on the go, or just to check my library for a title on my phone quick. While I don't rely on Amazon, Kobo, B&N, etc. I figure they're a last ditch extra extra backup of a majority of my stuff too.

I've had too many cloud storage providers close down and others change terms and increase prices that I just use a thumb drive for backup.

That why I use Dropbox. They are the leader in cloud storage. I have 30GB with OneDrive but I don't trust them or Google drive.

Dropbox charges $99/yr on their cheapest plan. I don't think I've spent that much on my unread ebooks.

Does make you wonder what happens when they start going after pirates and you've had your cloud storage hacked and released into the wild though

Yes, I read how much free storage you were able to accumulate but they don't offer it now. Currently it's only 2.5 GB free and $99/yr for up to 1 TB. If you didn't have the 21 GB, would you still use Dropbox for $99/yr?

I think cloud storage is a cash cow for these companies.

They still have the referral program last I checked. I started out with 2.5GB it's 500MB per referral. That's 16GB bringing you 18.5GB plenty for most.
When I joined it was 250mb per referral. I love they bumped it up which gave me more space.

I wish they had more plans than their $10 a month. I don't need 1TB. I'm okay with 21GB.

I like iCloud's 50GB for $1/month. That's a very reasonable price, and lets me store all my PDFs and pictures in the Cloud and access them from any of my iThings.

Of course. I was just using it as an illustration of what I think is a good compromise between price and capacity.
