Can you take a picture? I'm a little confused.

I doubt that mine looks any different to yours

The reader is attached to the spine of the cover by a sort of hinge mechanism. When you open the cover, the reader sort of slides to the left. If you fold the cover all the way over, so the back left-hand leaf is now behind the player (and behind the right-hand leaf), the player itself sits on the cover with about a 3/4" thickness of cover sticking out on the right.

On the PRS500, the cover was fastened to the back of the read. When you fold the cover right back, the reader stays in the same place on the right leaf of the cover. The left leaf is completely out of the way.

As I said, it's not a biggie, it just feels odd in my hand compared to the old model.

If it's still not clear, I'll take a picture of the two units side-by-side (but I'm not sure how to put photos on these posts).

Oh I see what you are saying. I guess it just never bothered me much. But if you were used to it a different way on the 500, I can see your problem. Maybe if you just hold it like that for a day straight you'll get used to it

i have the same probs with the stock case. its really uncomfortable.
i bought the light wedge with the black leather cover, too.
it's quite heavy, but you can detach the light unit and then it's a lot better. the reader stays in the middle if you fold the cover. but still too heavy and to cold in the hands just to hold the unit itself - and no protection, if you fall asleep and the reader slipps off your hands.

happy reading

Perhaps the easiest fix for me would be to remove the hinge-type thing on the spine, then Velcro the rear cover to the back of the reader. It's not that the cover won't fold back that's the problem -- it's the hinge moving the reader around. But I'm not sure I can detach the hinge without making a mess of the cover.

I suppose at a pinch I could just get and A4-sized piece of saddle leather and stick half of it on the reader.

When I use mine at home, I take the cover off entirely. It really makes it easier. I guess of the cold metal feel is bothersome, though, it would be a problem, but it doesn't bother me.

Is there any way to use your cover from the 500 on the 505, or is it not compatible?

Moving from the 500 to the 505 recently myself, it has taken me a little while to get used to the new way the cover works. I used to fold my cover back on my 500, but with the 505 I have generally held it almost like a real book, with the cover opening as the "left-hand page". So far, that has worked well for me. I haven't even tried to fold it back behind the Reader.

One thing I really like about the cover on the 505 vs the cover on the 500 is the feel - it just looks more like a real book cover then what was on the 500.

BTW - I love Waterfield's bags - have used several for my laptops and gadgets over the years. If you don't want a cover on while reading and are looking something to store it in while not in use, you should definitely take a look at Waterfield.

Sadly, the 500 cover has a sort of clip arrangement that fastens it rigidly to the reader. I could perhaps grind this off and stick it on the 505.

But, sadly, I have to sell the 500 to cover the cost of buying the 505.

I do like the look of the 505 case, but (so far as I can see) there is absolutely no reason why it couldn't have been fastened the same as on the 500. I suspect that nobody at Sony realized that the 500 cover could actually be folded right back, and that people would use it that way. I really can't see what advantage the 505 method of fastening has -- it is more complicated, and the little hinge could get broken in a drop. There must have been some perceived advantage, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is.

Shame, really, because in all other senses the 505 knocks the socks off the 500.

Yes, I ran my head against that policy as well. Quite annoying. The solution is to order it directly from I-Nique http://www.i-nique.com/. They are happy to send outside the UK.

And I can recommend the case - it is comfortable in daily use and protects the reader well.

Just wondering what everyone else does with the flap.
Actually, the cover that comes with the 505 is fake leather. That said, yes, you need to keep it on even when reading in bed. All you do it fold it back and get used to it. I actually find it's easier to hold the 505 with the cover then without. And the cover is there for protection. You do not want to put your 505 in your bag without the cover. Chances for damage will increase. And if you are reading in bed, what if you were to go to put your 505 on your nightstand and it slipped and fell on the floor? If you had the cover on, the cover would be closed and less chance of breaking.

Why do they show these cases/bags with the 500? Why not update the photos to show the 505? And do they actually fit the 505? It seems that showing the 500 is going to actually lose sales providing they do fit the 505.

Yikes! I've always kept mine on ~ mostly because I don't want it to get scratched and if & when I resell things (as I inevitably do with all electronic things), it's worth more if it's in better condition.

I always keep the case on. I find it comforting. I'm a recent switchover from books, so the idea of a "book" without a cover puts me into a bit of a panic! To me, the cover on feels like I'm reading a paperback, and I like it that way. The only problem is I sometimes still reach to turn the page I read every second I can, so I read while brushing my teeth and such. Sometimes, I get a little drop of water or two on the screen and my first thought is to wipe it off before I turn the page. Hard habit to break. I'm a little panicky at the thought of touching the silver any more than I need do. Don't want it to get corroded from skin oils or such... does it do that? Wish there were page turn buttons higher up the side

<--Have only been a convert for 3mo now, but have "sold" probably 5 people on buying one already... sure wish I got a commission from that!

Here's a question I hope isn't too stupid. I haven't bought a device yet but I'm leaning towards the 505 --

Does the cover stay open?

One of the most annoying things about normal books, especially paperbacks is that you have to constantly hold them open. If you set them down on the counter, or try to place them on a reading stand (e.g., on an exercise bike or elliptical), you lose your page.

It may sound funny but it's one thing that draws me to the idea of an eReader is being able to go hands free more easily.
