How to get KF8 to open at the cover?

Is there a way to get KF8 eBooks to open at the cover or is this bug going to forever exist?

What makes you think it's a bug and not the way things are intended to be?

I have used every secret sauce posted on MobileRead forums, and most of them only resulted in the book's opening in the middle of the TOC sigh. Finally I put the "text" semantic (in Sigil) at page one, chapter one, and that worked to open it there.

More recently I have experimented with removing the semantic altogether. Now about three-quarters of my books open at the cover, both on the Look Inside and when opened on a Kindle device or app. I regard that as the Senator George Aiken solution to a somewhat different problem: "Declare victory and get out." I'll accept 75 percent. Or as we used to say in the defense industry: "Good enough for government work!"

Not sure why anyone would want to it to open at the cover. Doesn't "opening" a book imply exactly that - that you're opening it, not looking at the cover?

Because you see the cover when looking at your list of books.

If a Kindle book opens at the cover, that's a bug. Amazon intends Kindle books to open at the first page of the actual text of the book.

That doesn't always work as intended. Many people want to open at the cover because they want to see a larger cover than the icons/thumbnails.

Should you have a wish to do that, you can always page back to see the cover. I doubt it's something many people want to do. I'd be irritated if every book opened at the cover.

"Many"?

IMO, if the majority of people wanted to see the cover when their Kindle books opened, that's what would happen.

IMO, if a significant minority wanted it, it would be an option in the software.

IMO, the vast majority of people just want to start reading the book. The cover has done its job when the book has been bought.

Agreed. If you can see the cover, then by definition the book is not "open". A book that you can see the cover of is "closed".

That is so wrong. An eBook is not a pBook and the difference is if you are viewing the the eBook, then it's open even if it's showing the cover.

ePub normally starts at the first page which in most cases is the cover.

We must agree to differ, Jon. Personally, I think the behaviour of the Kindle is entirely sensible in this regard: if I open a book, it's because I want to read it, not look at the cover. If I do want to look at the cover, I can simply go back a page or two and see it, but I certainly don't want that to be the default behaviour.

If you prefer the behaviour of ePub books, perhaps you should stick to those.

I think it's silly that you cannot see the full cover without having to go back. I'm think it's a mistake on Amazon's part not to show the cover.

But why do you actually care, Jon? You don't own a Kindle, and don't read Kindle books. Is this just another one of your "let's bash Amazon" threads?
