Maybe Google have a setting in Chrome or an extension that implements an open or save dialogue similar to Firefox

I suspected it couldn't be easily done from within a web page itself - hence my "Any chance of ..."

On 2.99.8 I still have this issue - if I add a format file to an existing book, it doesn't appear on the running server. It looks like it can be overcome by refreshing the site. I can do that via a Library Switch, but what if I only have one library. Or I can do it by restarting the browser, assuming I know how to do that.**

Maybe a site refresh 'button' is needed.

  • Why are so many browser functions that were once easy to do, now a PITA. FX to restart Firefox 53.03 with same tabs etc, it's 'open a browser console window and type "restart";.

How many regular people know how to open a 'browser console' let alone where to type the 'restart'. There was a time when the Firefox File menu had a Restart option.

Chrome's not much better, but at least its method is bookmarkable

@BR Hitting refresh in the browser should be enough for this. In general, the browser UI is not live. If you make any metadata changes in calibre the changes will not appear in the browser until you refresh.

If hitting refresh does not work, let me know.

@BR: I know of no way for a webpage to open a file on the local computer. Or even to get the browser to display the file open dialog after downloading reliably.

Is there a switch for an alternative (simple) gui without javascript?
I would testing the gui with the ereaders (Kindle, PocketBook, Tolino, Kobo, Energy Sistem, inkbook,Bookeen), but all browsers displays nothing ecxept "Loading, please wait".

I´m on 2.99.6 Windows-Portable

I tried the new server from the Kobo browser last night and that's all I got as well.

I think I mentioned this already in this thread, but you can drastically speed up the time it takes to build the rapydscript code, if you install rapydscript-ng which is the nodejs-based compiler. The embedded compiler in the calibre source code is really slow, this one makes it take hardly any time at all.

Of course F5 works

I was led astray in part by the fact that I'm using Chrome for testing, and by the message I've seen after installing a new version asking if I wanted to 'refresh/restore/reload/re????' the site. Is that going to happen in the real version 3.0?

I found out how to do it Chrome ==>> How to open downloads in Chrome automatically

Pre chrome browsers have had an option to pop a generic 'Download or Open?' question since time immemorial, by comparison what Chrome provides is antediluvian And I'm yet to find an extension to 'pop the question'.

I assume jelle emailed you about this? Nice!

While we are on that note, what is the likelihood that some other things can be unbundled?
  • e.g. chardet (looks to be totally different from the upstream project by that name? did it die or something, and then come back to life? how compatible are the two, and would it be easy to switch to the actually-maintained upstream project?)
  • Also hunspell, looks like it is bundling a simple copy of some hunspell release instead of linking src/calibre/utils/spell/hunspell_wrapper.cpp with $(pkg-config hunspell --libs), is there any strong reason for that?
  • odfpy seems to have some upstream development at least, would it be possible to get the fixes you have made, upstreamed, and use that instead?
  • templite and tinycss are on pypi, again, they may be small but can system versions be used anyway.

It is referring to two different things.

Refreshing the webpage just loads the latest version of the library content the server is serving, which may be the same, or may include database changes you have made.
The reloading the site popup means update the javascript that powers the offline reader. This happens whenever you update to a new version of calibre, or pull new changes to your source checkout with Development mode -- assuming that the new calibre code contains updated *.pyj source files that got compiled into an updated version of the calibre-server javascript.

@BR: As escwartz said, the popup that appears about updating the calibre application refers to updating the javascript calibre uses in the browser. Think of it as updating the tiny calibre application that lives in your browser. It will apear only once the first time you access the server after a calibre update. Of course, right now since the calibre updates are coming thick and fast, it will seem like it appears all the time.

@eschwartz: No can't say I have heard from jelle -- it has always been on my TODO list to unbundle the un-modified stuff once the new calibre build system was in operation.

hunspell is modified, see commit da7ef93e27

chardet long predates the upstream chardet (IIRC it came from firefox originally).

tinycss is modified. templite I dont know about (it was used by someone else's code in calibre).

odpy I tried to upstream way back when, without success. Can't say I am particularly inclined to spend time trying again.

Random thought: the error is almost always "max recursion exceeded" when fetching the list of "keys" for a "dictionary" (a type of array indexed by words instead of numbers). One way I can imagine this happening is that calibre is running out of memory and therefore unable to dynamically allocate memory to the "stack". Do you have a lot of memory on this computer? If not, do you have a rather large virtual memory paging file? I have 8GB of memory. My paging file size is controlled by Windows, and is currently 1.2 GB.

One error in the log looked like it happened during translation, when the template formatter was returning an error message. Do the errors go away if you run calibre in English? I tried running in German and everything worked.

Yes, that works, and I'm sure you have mentioned it earlier in the thread.

Unfortunately, the download links don't work. Tapping them just refreshes the screen. The server log shows the request was received. There must be something about the response the browser doesn't like. Are there more detailed logs I can look at?

Thanks both.

And IIRC it's a browser issued message, which probably means it can't be made more comprehensible. Or better yet perhaps, suppress it entirely. Why would a regular user ever respond with No.
