So I got Kobo Aura H20, I am a bit worried about the upgrade steps. So I currently got Kobo Start Menu 08 (2015-10-27) when I go to info. What steps would I need to proceed with?

Thank you for the report. Of the KSM wifi section, I would only use "wifi enable" and "wifi disable" with some confidence. The other things might work or not depending on circumstances like whether there are spaces in the ssid or the pw, or whether all characters used in the pw are available to the KSM keyboard. I think I will not improve on those parts of the wifi section, but will still not remove them, since some people might use them. Generally, I would recommend to use nickel to connect for the first time to a new network or to change the network. You could also try to use KOReader for this purpose.

You go to Aura One and Aura Edition 2 (and all other Kobo ereaders starting with Kobo Touch) and install the update you can find there. The update that you find there is the most recent one and replaces all previous updates.

I'm just curios: is there a reason that KSM8 support for these newer devices is not in the main KSM8 package (and it's separate) ?
Is it only temporary ?
I mean KSM8 already supports various/diverse Kobo devices, why the discrimination between the most recent and others ?

Thanks.

Doesn't the question kind of answer itself? The most recent devices postdate KSM8, hence there's an update for it.

As Frenzie said, it was the newer models that made the update necessary. Since it was to be expected that the situation was not yet stable and further updates might become necessary, I did not immediately repack the main package to include the update. And since then things have not changed. (And user reports whether something does work or not are coming very slowly.) But sure, finally I will repack KSM in order to make the installation easier for first time users.

After side load firmware and update Aura one to newest 4.3.8966, I cannot access KSM08 any more. restart always direct into nickel. Do I need to reinstall KSM?

I found the reason from previous post that I chose "handle update" > "install update" instead, should use install partial update. Previous post have KSM07_restore.zip. tshering, would you please make one restore file for KSM08? I should read previous post more carefully. Many thanks
oops, found restore_KSM08 in previous post and applied it, all good now.

Sure, makes sense, just curios and trying to confirm it. Thanks for all the work!

Thank you for pointing me to post 62. I have now deleted the file supplied there, since it was out of date. I recommend you install the update I mentioned above.

Thank you for your indication. I didn't find many issue except WIFI doesn't work any more. But I actually cannot prove that is because used the file in post 62. However, I set factory reset and redo everything cause I also need to use Calibre to reload my books (to set up auto collection). Thanks again. KSM is awesome.

Hello everyone! This is my first post here. I am very glad to be here. Been lurking for weeks. I expect a Kobo Aura One to be in my hands in several days. I want to install the latest KSM and KOReader when I'll get the device. Could you review and correct, if necessary, the install steps I have gathered from all the different posts to make the whole process easier for myself? I've inserted the text in a spoiler.

Spoiler:

Kobo Start Menu

Preparation
  1. Make sure that your reader is fully charged and generally in a good operating state (for instance, there must not be any problems with a corrupted database etc.)
  2. Switch off Wifi
  3. Check that enough free disk space is available on the reader
  4. Download the archive KBStartMenu_08.zip to your pc and extract the content

Step 1

  1. Connect the Kobo to your PC
  2. Copy the folder kbmenupngs to the root of the device (e.g. K:\)
  3. Safely eject the Koboreader drive and disconnect the USB cable
  4. You should then see the “Processing” message on your Kobo
  5. Reboot your device
  6. Check that all images (exit_nickel.png, switchtokoreader.png, etc.) are listed in the library and their thumbnails are displayed there, and at least once as tiles on the home screen. Only then proceed to step two.

Step 2

  1. Connect the Kobo to your PC
  2. Copy KoboRoot.tgz to the folder .kobo of the device
  3. Safely eject the Koboreader drive and disconnect the USB cable
  4. You should then see the “Updating” message on your Kobo
  5. Wait until the update is finished (do not interrupt it, even if it takes some time)

Aura One Patch

After the installation KSM should run on your device, but missing some functionallity.

Preparation
  1. At this point do not forget to select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always" (as described in the first post)
  2. "start nickel"; when nickel is running, connect via usb to the pc
  3. Install the patch for Aura One.

Steps
  1. Update to the latest firmware before installing KSM 08
  2. Extract KoboRoot.tgz from archive KSM08_ext_aura_one_04e.zip
  3. Copy KoboRoot.tgz to the folder .kobo of the device
  4. Safely eject the Koboreader drive and disconnect the USB cable
  5. Select (in KSM home) "handle update" > "install update" (do not select "install partial update")
  6. Wait until the device has rebooted

Koreader
  1. Download the latest stable version of KOReader newer than v2015.11 excluded or a nightly build of KOReader
  2. Extract the koreader folder of the zip into the .adds directory of your device

Is there a chance to brick the KA1 even if I follow the steps 100% correctly?

This one's really up to personal preference, otherwise it sounds correct.

If the KA1 is like the H2O you can generally still perform a manual factory reset with a paperclip: https://www.kobo.com/help/en-US/arti...obo%20Glo%20HD (I couldn't find a relevant help article for the KA1)
