Hello
I installed KSM 8 successfully, but the patch instructions here are giving me a hard time:
Quote:
extract KoboRoot.tgz from archive uploaded to this post
copy the extracted KoboRoot.tgz into .kobo of your device
There is no such file attached to the linked post.
Looking at the contents of this post's attachment it seems to contain a few files from the original KSM 8 archive (I assume updated versions).
Am I supposed to merge these files with the default KSM 8 version, repack and then copy the archive to my kobo or am I supposed to only place the updated files on my kobo?

Depending upon what system you unzip the archive with, it may completely unarchive the KoboRoot.tgz that is within the zip file and produce the folders themselves. You don't want this. For example, Mac's do this by default in Finder but if you just "unzip <archive name>" in a terminal you'll be left with KoboRoot.tgz as required.

The name of the uploaded archive is KSM08_ext_aura_one_04e.zip, it contains the file KoboRoot.tgz. Take care that your extraction tool does not extract the content of KoboRoot.tgz too (this seems to happen especially to Mac users).

Ah, I didn't even realize there is an archive within an archive.
Thanks!

custom screensaver

[whups, wrong thread. sorry]

Spoiler:
Hi people,

first of all thank you all for the amazing work! I just recently got a used Kobo Glo and instantly started tinkering with it, with this thread's help. This is a very valuable resource!

But what I haven't found is an answer to the following question:
Is there a way to set a custom screensaver from a certain file? I've seen tips on using the current books cover, on excluding certain files from the random image thing and so on. But I want to set a specific file as my screensaver.

In KSM08 itself I can set a HTML-File to display when my device is turned off. I just modified the file to show my email-address and a short message to contact me if I loose it and someone finds it.

I want to do something similar for the koreader's screensaver, when I suspend my kobo glo. I've searched some threads, looked on other places on the web and tried figuring out the screensaver.lua file, but I have zero experience with lua so far and found nothing of help in there.

Is there an official way to do what I am looking for (which I may have overlooked), or is there a simple way to modify the mentioned lua-file for my needs?

I am new here. so may be asked silly question.
I followed instruction successfully installed KSM08 and applied patch on my new Kobo Aura One. Then successfully added Koreader and Coolread and added lots books. Both reader and KSM working fine, and I can use either of them to read books I loaded. But when I start nickel, I only can see 6 files loaded to root from KSM, cannot see any book I loaded.
I thought that might because I set up too many layer of folders for those books, so I copied one book (using file manager of the Coolreader) to the root and into nickel to check if can see it from booklist. Unfortunately still cannot see the book from list. Then I exited nickel and used File Manager of Coolreader delete that book. after doing that, I found I cannot start nickel from KSM anymore. Now KSM and both readers are all working properly but cannot start nickel anymore. Any tips to fix this? thanks in advance.

Generally, nickel looks only for books newly added to the internal storage (or for books newly deleted from the internal storage), when you connect and disconnect the reader as usb device from within nickel. It is at that time that nickel adds the data of the new books to the database, and removes data from deleted books. Therefore it is essential to connect to the pc from within nickel, when you add/remove books that nickel is concerned with.
I have some doubts whether nickel not starting anymore is connected to the fact that you deleted a certain book; especially if nickel does not know anything of the existence of this book. It might have a different cause. Did you do the folloing step of the installation procedure?
Quote:
... check that all images (exit_nickel.png, switchtokoreader.png, etc.) are listed in the library and their thumbnails are displayed there, and at least once as tiles on the home screen. Only then proceed to step two.
If you have not yet done this you can do it now. Start nickel by selecting "tools" > "nickel divers.msh" > "start nickel without fmon.sh" (or similar, I do not have my reader with me, but I am sure you will find the correct menu entries), and visit the exit_nickel.png as described above. Then power off from within nickel by using the power button.
If you try to start nickel by selecting "start nickel without fmon.sh" and nickel still refuses to start, the database might have suffered after all. Then you might try to delete (or maybe better rename) the database. The location is .kobo/KoboReader.sqlite. You will have to go again through the registration process. You will also have again to deal with exit_nickel.png as mentioned above.

Many thanks. follow your instruction and I can start nickel now.
Your answer also make me understand why my books not showing in nickel because when I added those book my Kobo was in KSM rather than nickel. now under nickel I connect to PC added another 2 books, after disconnect from PC, nickel updated and all my books showing in the book list. You are champion, solve all my issues.

The patch doesn't seem to solve all problems with KOreader for me.

When I press the top of the screen (to open the menu) from inside a book in Koreader, Koreader immediately crashes every time. I the get a "Koreader exited unexpectedly" message.

Context:
After a factory reset my Kobo Aura H2O automatically installed nickel version 4.3.8945. I then installed KSM8, the patch (with the proper "install update"), and then KOreader.
I did this whole routine (including factory reset) several times.

I hope this is the right place for this question. Any ideas?

I just downloaded and installed the latest nightly. And I see the exact same problem as you.I will reinstall an older version of KOReader. You might want to ask at the KOReader threat, or maybe better at Github.

It probably is some bug with latest version of koreader, there's a lot work on UI, so best to report it on github as tshering suggested.

And include crash.log content (you can found it in koreader's root directory). It will be solved, but people should know what happens.

KOReader v2015.11-930 Has some issues, (possibly related to the new menu sort features). Crashes are usually fixed right away. So you might try an earlier nightly or wait for a new release.

Luck;
Ken

ap_scan.sh ssid with spaces

Hi, teeny harmless bug report.
When ap_scan.sh displays ssids, it only shows the first word of each ssid. So, "The Coffee House" becomes "The".

The string is probably being properly quoted elsewhere in the script though, because it does in fact work and connect. I guess to prove or disprove that, you'd have to set up two aps that start with the same word, and verify that you can connect to either one.
