"Science suggests that some people.." would be more accurate. I've not seen any good-quality study in this arena with digital natives as subjects.

Uhh, you didn't see this video posted earlier in this thread? The Kindle Flare inexpensively can switch to "bookshelf mode" to not only show off [audibly] your books to others but provide that very comforting environment.

The next generation of Kindle Flare will enhance this experience by having the following features; 1. built in lens capable of providing a holographic projection of a virtual bookshelf filled with books in your collection 2. A built in noise meter capable of being set to trigger a holographic projection of a virtual librarian to hush those around you. 3. Further enhancements are currently being considered based upon customer request.

An example of a request which has been requested (and rejected) was called the simulated "Paper Cut" This feature would randomly project a tiny fine blade to cause a minuscule nick to the finger when swiping the kindle flare screen.

No, I hadn't (can't watch youtube at work and that's where I mostly do my mobileread browsing). But that bookshelf mode needs to be updated first, before I even consider buying it! An empty bookshelf looks so sad...

True, perhaps you should wait for the next generation kindle flare which will be capable of projecting images of a virtual library. In the meantime, upon purchase of a kindle flare customers are offered to purchase the following bookshelf wallpaper at a steep discount.

On a serious note, traditional print books have one big advantage, in my opinion: They're more esthetic, on several levels. There's something cool about holding an actual "book," especially one that's been autographed and maybe partly soaked in a memorably rain storm or chewed on by an animal.

Other than that, you can do so much more with ebooks, it's hard to imagine why anyone would still prefer print publications. If you're an environmentalist, print books are verboten. And if you have a transient lifestyle, they're just another thing that has to be packed.

For me, the interesting thing is what you can do with ebooks. It's mind boggling, yet its grossly underutilized. For starters, ereaders just don't have all the bells and whistles websites do.

Another interesting thing is that many publishers like to recreate their print publications as epubs. But rather than take advantage of their new capabilities, they make carbon copies of their print books, which are often obscenely boring.

It would be interesting to see a publisher release one of its books as an epub - but in a dramatically upgraded format, with nice styling, pictures, etc.

I'm not sure aesthetic considerations qualify as an advantage. They're more about personal preference. While I do agree that a lot of books in a shelf on a wall make for an attractive wall, I'm not sure I agree that an individual book is necessarily more attractive than my Kindle Voyage. If you do that's fine and that's the point. Aesthetics are personal. Advantages are more about utility.

I really have to agree with both articles. I can recall details from physical books much better than ebooks. When I want to find one particular quote from a book I can remember which part of the book it was in (middle part, bottom-left) then flip through the pages to find it. I can't do the same on ebooks, and my ability to recall details from them is MUCH worse.
The Scientific American article talks about reading in a computer monitor. This is different from reading on an e-reader. I didn't think I would like an e-reader, because I disliked reading from a computer monitor. When I tried an e-reader, I found it was nothing like reading from a monitor. One big difference is that I'm stuck in front of the monitor, so it's not a comfortable experience. With an e-reader, I can hold it and sit comfortably however I like. I must adapt to the monitor, while the e-reader adapts to me. The article claims that the size of books is an advantage for paper books. It's certainly not true for me - If I'm going to read War and Peace, I'd much rather read it on an e-reader than lug around a bulky, heavy tome of a paper book. Perhaps others really enjoy the feel and smell of paper books, but for me, a book is a book.

There are lots of large-screen reading devices around for those who prefer a larger screen, of course. I read fiction on my Kindle, but PDFs and academic journal articles on my 12.9" iPad Pro, because I prefer a large screen for those. My iPad is considerably lighter in weight than my 3-volume hardback New English Library edition of "War and Peace" . (Although the printed version does come with a rather nifty bookmark which has all the family trees printed on it, which is rather nice!)

I believe the creator of Calibre gave me a detailed step by step process on how to fix it. I'm also having issues with my kindle keyboard
battery discharging rapidly and may have to research how to replace the battery. Anyway, to read a book you won't run into any technical difficulties. The following video illustrates in general terms how technology can be frustrating.
But, have you ever set down a paper book for awhile and horrors, LOST YOUR PLACE? Then you have to hunt all around for where you last were in the book!

Ebooks mean never having to keep a bookmark handy....
