Books also have an advantage over ebooks because you don't run into technological issues. For example, it's happened when I'm reading something on my Sony PRS T-1 and then I get the spinning wheel of death. Then I have to post in the sony forum section and get guidance on how to soft reset, hard reset, delete the book, redownload it, etc. While trying to get a book to synch from Calibre to my ereader I also had to get feedback from the Calibre forum section. I believe the creator of Calibre gave me a detailed step by step process on how to fix it. I'm also having issues with my kindle keyboard
battery discharging rapidly and may have to research how to replace the battery. Anyway, to read a book you won't run into any technical difficulties. The following video illustrates in general terms how technology can be frustrating. |

Technology/technical difficulties can do that to you. I guess it would be possible to scream and yell at a book but it seems less likely. I’ve been influenced by several authors who wrote about the risk of not technology per se, but dependence on the technique of technology. The French Sociologist, Jaques Ellul wrote extensively about this in The Technology Society. In a science fiction format, Frank Herbert wrote about the risk of mankind developing a “machine like attitude”. It’s important to note that these authors would not be considered Luddite’s in any sense of the word (See: Samuel Butler’s Erewhon). That being said another advantage of reading physical paper books rather than an electronic device is less distractions. When I read on a tablet I find it easy to get distracted and surf the internet, check out facebook, twitter, etc. Even with a dedicated ereader with wifi off there is an indirect distraction of wanting to keep up with the latest trends in ereaders. With a physical book there are less distractions.

![]() Also I think it's one of the advantages of ebooks. When you run into a problem with a print book you throw it away or just put up with it. With ebooks and ereaders you just fix it. Paper books and ebooks are susceptible to a lot of the same problems. Neither handle fire well. Or water, with some exceptions. Dropping is harder on an ereader but it's pretty hard on print books as well. Once, while sitting on the edge of Grand Canyon with my feet hanging over, reading a paper book while on vacation, I felt a bit of crumbling and quickly moved from the edge. The book fell and fell and fell. I can't actually tell how badly it was damaged but I'm sure it was a mess. Or possibly it's still falling. ![]() The thing is if the ereader has problems you can always reset it. How do you reset a paper book? Barry |

Personally, I like the smell of books. Every book has a unique smell. It reminds me of good memories I associate with the book. I love e-readers, but I can't smell books any more.

Books clearly have the advantage when it comes to smell. . .

For me, the only advantage of paper books over electronic books is that you can show them off. A library (which has always been a very comforting environment for me) is a bit more difficult with electronic books and a lot more expensive too!
So, that's the only reason I have paper books: to show (I also have a house that's big enough for a library ![]() |

Ah, now I remember one more advantage of physical books over ebooks. Science proves that people read slower, less accurately and less comprehensively on screens than on paper.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...paper-screens/ http://lifehacker.com/5898644/read-a...mber-something I really have to agree with both articles. I can recall details from physical books much better than ebooks. When I want to find one particular quote from a book I can remember which part of the book it was in (middle part, bottom-left) then flip through the pages to find it. I can't do the same on ebooks, and my ability to recall details from them is MUCH worse. |
