When you say "device of the same type," do you mean that one could not download an illegal copy of a KFX book initially delivered to a Kindle Fire and read it on K4PC (which now supports KFX)? Or do you mean any Kindle device/app that can read KFX can read the illegal copy?

I believe that transfer of KFX books has only been shown to work between e-ink kindle devices. I don't know if any other case has been tested and I don't care enough about this to pursue it myself.

In the end it doesn't matter. Copying KFX between devices only works for books that are designated by the publisher to be sold DRM-free.

Greetings... Please pardon my intrusion, as I am not a programmer. I am looking for a solution here that will allow me to read my Kindle KFX (retail) books in Calibre (and hopefully convert them to EPUB/AZW3 book modes so that I can read them in Calibre. I buy ebooks from Amazon, but I don't really enjoy reading them on the Kindle Fire device. I read books on my PC mostly. I can import my Kindle KFX books to Calibre in the newest app (2.80) (Thank you, Kovidgoyal). It "see's" the Kindle book - but it doesn't convert it. And it cannot read it, either.

Is there by chance a project in the works to make it possible to convert the KFX to EPUB/ASW3, or am I simply stuck with reading my Kindle books in my Kindle Fire? (sigh....) A reply would be much appreciated. BJ1947

That was my understanding from reading this thread. It is only with regard to converting Kindle to other formats that KFX is being defined as a new form of DRM.

As a publisher I will be interested to see how, if at all, this new format changes the dynamics of file theft. In any case it won't be for a long time due to Amazon's need to maintain their K8-device consumer base. By then many authors might be dead from starvation.

I can't help myself. I have to take the bait, although off-topic. Authors starve for many reasons but I doubt piracy is high on the list. Probably contracts with the large traditional publishers are right near the top for most.

I don't know all of the factors involved, but in my testing as long as there is an average of at least three regular spaces for every one non-breaking space then the nbsp's are retained. If there are too many nbsp's per regular space then they are replaced with regular spaces.
Thanks for that, jhowell! That kind of conditional treatment would certainly be consistent with the engineers' stated purpose (and maybe it's even a solution they developed after I complained so loudly).

I've still been inserting nonbreaking spaces in case this ever got fixed, and now I'm glad I have.

With the Calibre's KFX output plugin you can do the other way around.
Download from Amazon in AZW3 format and then convert to KFX. Although I really don't see the point, if all you're going to do is to read on pc...

You need to download in a non-KFX format, and then the usual tools from Apprentice Alf's blog will let you remove the DRM so that calibre can convert them to other formats.

Or just install Kindle for PC and read your books in that.

Or just use Amazon's Cloud Reader, for that matter, if the goal is just to read on the PC. But the OP did say the goal is to read in Calibre specifically.

As stated by others, there is currently no way to convert KFX to another format for use outside of Amazon's software. I do not know of any efforts being made to change this situation.

See the Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre thread for ways to avoid KFX and solve your problem that way.

Actually, I believe Kindle for PC was recently updated for KFX and Enhanced Typesetting. That was discussed on KBoards.com in the Writer's Cafe by authors who initially interpreted it just as Amazon's way of imposing DRM on books downloaded to that app. But I haven't checked it out myself.

Kindle for PC/Mac version 1.19 was recently released and those books that support it now get downloaded a KFX format. It's currently possible to stay on 1.17 and avoid KFX.

I just discovered today that not all K8 formatting is currently supported in the KFX format. When I converted a standard novel, KP3 indicated the book is Enhanced Typesetting supported. But when I converted my test file with all the text boxes, frames, lines, tables, etc, to see what would display correctly, everything displayed correctly but the file information showed the ebook as not supported for Enhanced Typesetting.

I'm not sure what the actual relationship between Enhanced Typesetting and KFX is -- everything I've read so far treats the two as intrinsically bound -- yet these results would suggest either the two are not synonymous, or that perhaps KP3 is only displaying a mobi8 file for ebooks that are not supported.

Any thoughts from those more knowledgeable about these matters?

In the meantime, I'm going to email Amazon and see if what, if anything, they have to say about this.
