In the end it doesn't matter. Copying KFX between devices only works for books that are designated by the publisher to be sold DRM-free. |

Greetings... Please pardon my intrusion, as I am not a programmer. I am looking for a solution here that will allow me to read my Kindle KFX (retail) books in Calibre (and hopefully convert them to EPUB/AZW3 book modes so that I can read them in Calibre. I buy ebooks from Amazon, but I don't really enjoy reading them on the Kindle Fire device. I read books on my PC mostly. I can import my Kindle KFX books to Calibre in the newest app (2.80) (Thank you, Kovidgoyal). It "see's" the Kindle book - but it doesn't convert it. And it cannot read it, either.
Is there by chance a project in the works to make it possible to convert the KFX to EPUB/ASW3, or am I simply stuck with reading my Kindle books in my Kindle Fire? (sigh....) A reply would be much appreciated. ![]() |

As a publisher I will be interested to see how, if at all, this new format changes the dynamics of file theft. In any case it won't be for a long time due to Amazon's need to maintain their K8-device consumer base. By then many authors might be dead from starvation. ![]() |

Download from Amazon in AZW3 format and then convert to KFX. Although I really don't see the point, if all you're going to do is to read on pc... |

Actually, I believe Kindle for PC was recently updated for KFX and Enhanced Typesetting. That was discussed on KBoards.com in the Writer's Cafe by authors who initially interpreted it just as Amazon's way of imposing DRM on books downloaded to that app. But I haven't checked it out myself.

I just discovered today that not all K8 formatting is currently supported in the KFX format. When I converted a standard novel, KP3 indicated the book is Enhanced Typesetting supported. But when I converted my test file with all the text boxes, frames, lines, tables, etc, to see what would display correctly, everything displayed correctly but the file information showed the ebook as not supported for Enhanced Typesetting.
I'm not sure what the actual relationship between Enhanced Typesetting and KFX is -- everything I've read so far treats the two as intrinsically bound -- yet these results would suggest either the two are not synonymous, or that perhaps KP3 is only displaying a mobi8 file for ebooks that are not supported. Any thoughts from those more knowledgeable about these matters? In the meantime, I'm going to email Amazon and see if what, if anything, they have to say about this.
