It's not.

It's a sidegrade for iPad and Galaxy Tab owners who have rejected 6" readers because the screens are too small.
Good point, I haven't realized that.

If KA1 uses LEDs, then this feature of nickel to put reader in sleep except for IR this means it uses much more battery than H2O.

Anyone who mentions (s)he has problems with battery should mention if LEDs are on or off while reading.
My LEDs are completely off about 95% of the time I'm reading.

The KA1 does not have IR sensors, which was DNSB's point.

Is the lightness of the device getting in the way of the increased screen size? No.

The KA1 gives a reader to -both- those who need a larger screen (but not a lighter device), -and- to those who need a lighter device.

The battery life has been discussed to death here. Start with a 24 hour day, subtract 15 (suggested battery life of the KA1 on a single charge), you're left with 9 hours. Subtract 5 for sleep, despite the average being closer to 8) and you're left with 4 hours. Four hours of time not spent reading if and only if you don't have access in any of the time to an outlet or portable charger. And that assumes you're going to read for 15+ hours of the day.

If you don't like the trade off Kobo went with with the KA1 then don't buy it.

Yes, you are correct. My mistake. But, the touch should still be off in sleep mode.

Point of order Mr. Every Reader Must Have A Cover: the Aura ONE sleep cover is 140g (to the best that I've been able to find) making Aura ONE's total mass 370g.

There's no rule saying you need to buy a cover from Kobo.

You can get a case/cover that ways between 100g & 130g. You can even get one that works as a stand so the weight would be irrelevant.

No, it is sleep, not low power mode. It is sleep for the CPU and other hardware. Lower power mode would mean the CPU was running, but a lot slower than the maximum it can.

The problem is that we are using the same word to describe different things. Alan_s wasn't clear about what he was really referring to but reading the full post made it obvious.

If you are going to insist that every reader have a cover then I will insist that you factor the weight/mass/bulk of those covers in your total weight/mass/bulk calculations regardless of the origins.

Except when the owners are carrying them. Unless you can name such a cover that has no weight, no mass, and no bulk?

I've not read of someone saying a Reader and/or tablet is too heavy to hold while carrying it. I've read of weight issues why using a Reader and/or tablet because most people prefer to use them with one hand.

Actually, this is how nickel works on H2O, and quite possibly how it works on all other kobos.

After nickel shows new page and do some "housekeeping" it goes into some kind of sleep, turning all off except IR and light.

On KA1 there may be problem why it needs that much power, it may keep much more to keep touch screen on all the time, but I'm not expert on this.

So, I'm not talking about sleep sleep, but some form of partial sleep when user just reads page and reader awaits for user input.

If you need more explanation, take a look here: https://github.com/koreader/koreader/issues/2239

And your point is... what? Just because you personally have not seen or heard complaints about devices being too big or too heavy does not mean those complaints do not exist. So here you go: Kindle DX. It's too big, mostly due to the waste of space that is the keyboard. It's too heavy, being over a pound without a cover and near to 2 pounds with one.

I still haven't received this firmware update... I really want it!

So I recall seeing in this thread that I might need to "change affiliation" or something, if I want to get this update...?

What does that entail... is it hard to do... will it limit the functionality of my reader in some way? I basically never use the Kobo store or anything like that - I pretty much sideload everything (with my Kobo - on Kindle it's a different story.)

If I had a stand then I would have to carry it around with with me with my DX which would be even more weight and bulk than the folio cover.
