Is there a reason why this firmware hasn't been posted in Direct Links to Kobo Firmware? Or am I looking in the wrong direction?

There is a post with the link in it towards the end of the thread. But, the person who started and hence maintains the first post has not been around for a while. Hence the first post hasn't been updated.

With regard to weight and size: I think companies are going berserk. Even the biggest and heaviest e-reader inside a cover are much smaller, thinner, and lighter than any hardcover book I own. There's no need to make them thinner or lighter. The KA1 in its official cover is half as thick as my KPW1 in a third party cover, and the KPW1 is already half to one third of the average mass market paperback. |

Consumers greatly prefer convenience of carry over convenience of use. It's why Palm utterly destroyed its competition in the early PDA days. It's why there are so many 6" and smaller readers out there and almost nothing larger. Given Aura ONE's large screen requirement some other compromise had to be made to cater to convenience of carry. That compromise had to be weight, and battery capacity is the second most significant contributor to weight after metal vs. plastic cases in portable and mobile devices. It is not a stupid decision. It is a reasonable decision based on the demands of the market as a whole. If you don't like it then buy a battery pack for your Aura ONE. |

I'm not sure that at 7.8" the size isn't a bigger impediment to carry than the weight. Even with my cargo pants the reader sticks out of the pocket, and once it's not the pocket (backpack, fanny pack) the extra weight is much less noticeable.

Combination of both likely. The H2O does have a bigger battery AND less screen to refresh. The KA1 has more area to light, but I'm not really sure it takes that much more power for that versus the power to change/refresh that much more screen area.

I don't know about the H2O, but the KA1 does become horribly bright when set to 20% or more. At 15%, it's as bright as my KPW1 at 15 out of 24 (+/- 60%). I can imagine the KA1 using more battery power for many people.

Unless the LEDs are a significant power drain. Or maybe the A1 is more efficient; more sleeping relative to page refreshes? |

It's not. It's a sidegrade for iPad and Galaxy Tab owners who have rejected 6" readers because the screens are too small. |

You should NEVER put an eInk Reader in a pocket. Good chance for it to get broken.

One reason my H2O battery lasts so long is when I don't need the front light, I have it off. The screen is good enough to me to be able to read when I have enough external light.

With my KA1, I just turned wifi on and auto sync on and did a sync.
It said "sync complete"; however, my version remained 4.2.8110. I guess the new version is not available with my account!?! Does this sound right? . . . . . . Pete |

f, if you're responding to me, I prefer to continue using kobo.com for my firmware syncing (and I only do firmware syncing...no books syncing).
I'm surprised that apparently the newer version was not available for my sync attempt!?! |

If you don't want to download it manually, and don't want to change affiliate to something where kobo already ships the 4.2.8283... (beta or bestbuyca works)... then you'll just have to wait. Your call *shrug*
(You can change affiliate back to whatever it was after the upgrade. The firmware would be downloaded from Kobo either way.) |
