Seeing all the exploding ecigarettes in the news, perhaps a vape hookah would be a safer bet. I don't even know if anyone makes them, but they should.

Since the oven and the heater use about the same power, bake more. Multitask the utilities.
Oh I understand stupid installs. How about the thermostat right over a vent? That will screw up a bill too.

I am running out of ideas to help with your bills. If your doors are drafty at the bottom, you can attempt to roll a towel and use it as a draft stopper.
I said attempt because if your cat is anything like my dog, she would just turn it into a new bed.
I would say stuff old pillows around the window but that was to keep the summer heat out of a room. Temporarily duct tape the paneling where a draft was coming in. (Ok so I think that is now a permanent solution.)

Cover the air conditioner with something to keep breezes from blowing through it.
If it is a sunny day, open the curtains to let the sun shine in.

Still thinking.
I thought of a couple more but they are extreme and probably wouldn't work for you.
The first was find a sugar daddy to buy you clothes and take you to a motel. (Oh wait, that was for a bathtub not heat.) The second was start figuring out a way to move south before next winter.

Like I said those are the extremes.

The cat must of gotten into the food I cooked last night. She somehow wedge a piece of meat on the large stove burner when I wasn't looking and I didn't catch it because we have very little lighting due bulbs blowing out. Now it's a charcoal blacked mess. I pulled the burner out. The silver part of the prongs that are okay it's where the silver prongs meets the start of the burner where the gunk is.

I tried scrubbing it off with a heavy duty scrubby after soaking it in dish water but not much change. I do not have baking soda or white vinegar. I do have apple cider vinegar but I'm not sure if it would damage it I'm at my wit's end here.
It's my only big burner.

Thanks. I'm going to get some baking soda or do you know a better cleaner that removes charred blacken gunk from a stove burner?

We need a good things/happy thread. I'm just full of happiness today. Money came in today from unexpected source. Rent is paid and food money left over.

It feels as the weight of a brick wall has been lifted from my shoulders. I've been crying happy tears for the past few hours.

You are going to think this is crazy, but your baking soda paste. Scrub off all you can. Then turn the burner to high and let it cook everything else off.

Glad to hear you have grocery money.

Glad to hear that you had a windfall Blossom, but I keep wondering... isn't there *any* social security where you live?

In the Netherlands, you could end up having to sell your house and moving into a very small apartment. When living on welfare only, you'll probably only be able to afford rent/gas/electricity, some clothing, and food and a bit of convenience stuff if you're very frugal. There are even possibilities to get rid of very large debts, although you'll be living by the skin of your teeth for 3 years.

However, normally, you don't have to be afraid to end up on the streets; if *that* happens, you probably have some very serious issues besides not having a job.

We have people over here who don't have a lot of money and/or needed support from the state. I've been one of them in the past, and could be one of them again if I'm unlucky, but I never had to fear ending up homeless. I can't even imagine it.

I hope your situation gets better soon.

Social security only applies is she is very disabled and then it could be up to 5 years before she gets approved. Or if you are retirement age, 62 or 67.5 (for full benefits) and have paid in all your adult life.

So... if you end up without a job for whatever reason, even if it's not your own fault (such as a bankrupt company), the government is just going to let you end up homeless? And if you didn't 'pay in all your adult life'; off to the streets again, at 62 or 67.5?

In that case, I'm glad I don't live in America. Taxes in the Netherlands are high (up to 52% at this time, but it has been 60%), but I'd rather have that, than having to live in constant fear of losing my job.

"All your adult life" is a bit deceiving, I believe the threshold is something like 25 quarters or six years and three months, not necessarily consecutively. Then your pension is based on the total amount of your payroll taxes over your lifetime. Someone who earned minimum wage for the minimum amount of time will receive very little, certainly not enough to live on.

I am fortunate in that I have paid payroll taxes for fifty five years, although most of that was at a relatively low salary, so my pension is more than most. However if that was my only source of income it would still be below poverty level. Again I am fortunate in that it's not my only source of income.
