Yesterday morning is wasn't very busy in the morning, so I decided that after almost a month of working more than full time I deserved an afternoon off (I normally have a couple of half days off during the work week). I finally managed to get a couple of things done and bought which I didn't have time for over the last couple of weeks.
However, in the afternoon it was very busy in the store. So it looks like I won't be getting any time off the rest of the week, and possibly next week. After weeks of working more than full time, plus being expected to be social I haven't had the time I need to recharge. The extra money is nice, though. I might be able to get the camera I've been looking at before I go on vacation after all. Now it's time to find some motivation to get through the day and next week and a half. |

Well, that went better than expected. (Correction: It went as I had hoped
![]() Just called the lady in question, and told her the restaurant I picked was now part of a chain of restaurants, to which $Restaurant1 in her own town also belongs. "Yeeaaaah.... I know that one. *laughs* Well.... *giggles* Ahem..." When I told her that wearing format attire, showing up in a huge expensive car and behaving like royalty would essentially be necessary to not look out of whack, she laughed some more and agreed it would be a good idea to look for something else. I did catch her out of the house though, so I'll be calling back later. Last edited by Katsunami; 01-04-2017 at 01:51 PM. |

Add me to the list of the recently sick.
I spent several days up till a day ago with a perpetually runny nose and bouts of explosive sneezing. My SO plied me with allergy pills and Earl Grey tea (which temporarily dries up the sinuses.) The last time I sneezed like that it was an allergic reaction to Bradford Pear pollen, but it's the wrong part of the season for that to be the cause. Whatever it was wasn't bad enough to produce a real fever or leave me bed-ridden, but did mean things I wanted to get to that required a clear head and concentrated effort didn't happen. I re-read an old book or two in what an old friend called a "comfortable old shoe" mode, and waited it out. Whatever it was is gone now and I'm back to normal. It was likely a low level cold, leaving me wondering just where I got it, as I haven't been out or social and have only seen my SO on a daily basis. I seldom get colds, so they tend to come as more of a surprise than they might otherwise be. ______ Dennis |

NYC has a standard drill for it. If a heavy snowfall is predicted, the garbage trucks all get snow chains and plows attached, the salt trucks head out to the major arteries, and there are a thousand plows on the streets while the snow is just beginning to fall. I do recall one surprise storm years back that dropped 2' of snow on Manhattan overnight. Every bar and restaurant had an impromptu snow party, because no one could go anywhere, and the city was socked in for a couple of days. I saw people on 3rd Avenue, which is a major north/south artery, staring open mouthed. "Holy shit! This is what it looks like when there's no traffic! I've never seen it like that before!" Other places are less used to it. Atlanta, GA, got 1 inch of snow, and the mayor reportedly asked that it be declared a Federal disaster area. Donald Trump tweeted "No". ![]() Las Vegas got about 2", and had to call the Air Force for assistance. They don't have snow removal equipment, since they never get any. Our friend Naomi, who is an Air Force vet who was stationed there for a while, was deeply amused. Washington DC is supposed to be getting snow. We anticipate snarky comments we can hear from here from our friend Lee who lives in DC suburb Arlington, VA. She grew up in Buffalo, NY, which gets lots of snow, and is deeply amused by DC drivers who start spinning out on the roads when there's a 1/4" accumulation. ![]() ______ Dennis |

I listen to audiobooks because I can't read very long due to eye damage. So, I buy from Audible a lot. It is incredibly irritating to get to a book in a series and it's been pulled from sale. It was there a month ago. So, I go to the other series. I can get the next book, but the book after that has been pulled from sale as has another one after that. GRRRRRRR.. This contract stuff drives me nuts!! Sniff. Grump.

*raises paw*
Add me to the sickie club. Low-level cold. My sinus pressure was so bad this morning but tonight it all seems to be draining. At least my sinus headache's gone away. We laugh at places that close down with an inch of snow. We got 3 inches Sunday night, another 6 inches Monday night. You shovel it out of your way and go on. Now it's 20 below zero again. Our high was 9 below zero and we'll stay below zero for the next couple of days again. At least that nice cold air helps my sinuses hurt less. Just as good as an ice bag on the forehead. |

I'm mega depressed. I think my PC got hit with a power surge. It took out 2 SSD drives. This despite have a power surge protector bar. Most of what I had I can replace. Except my ebook library. It's the older books from Fictionwise and the Sony Store that I won't be able to replace. And yes, I had a backup...on the other SSD that I lost.

If you took a hit that got through a surge protector, you may need to look into a UPS. What happens when you try to access the SSDs? (My Cailbre library resides on HD, but is periodically synced with a USB thumbdrive using the open source Free File Sync application.) ______ Dennis |

Can't see the ssds. I took them to a shop to see if they could access them. Nothing. UPS should be delivered this week. A third SSD was unharmed. My stereo equipment was unharmed. All going through the same power bar.
