Tools Software Jailbreak for PW2, PW3, PW3W, KT2, KV, KOA and KT3

Thank you, for the step-by-step guide, no problems installing jailbreak, kual, screensaver and koreader. Like guys before, I had a long moment of panic when screen freeze at factory firmware downgrade.

Maybe, in that case, something specific to the screen freeze should be added on the jailbreak page so that people don't start panicking.

thanks for maintaining the tools to make kindles more open.

I have a PW2, jailbroken two years before and had KUAL running. I have not upgraded its firmware since 5.4.2 as it was not JB safe those days and did not use it. I have decided to use it again, and just have read that JB is working again, so updated JB (Kindle Touch/PW1/PW2 5.0.x - 5.4.4.2 JailBreak. Plus FW 5.x USBNetwork: kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N, kindle-usbnet-0.21.N) and KUAL (2.7), installed MRPI (1.6.N), k5_rescue_pack_20150705, Coward's Rescue Pack Addon (crpa_2)

If the KUAL 'install mrpackages' button works but the ;log mrpi command does not work, then the JB survival code is missing or damaged.

Questions:

1. Have I missed installing/updating something necessary?
2. Which is the recommended software version to use? (Is there anything against using the latest, v5.8.7?)
3. How to update safely? Copying update_kindle_paperwhite_v2_5.8.7.bin to mrpackages and have MRPI install it?

I am in the process of jailbreaking a KT3 (G000K9) for my son following the first post in this thread. I have copied the initial software to the KT3 and am now charging it before updating it, as somehow the battery got low. I was preparing for further steps by downloading the other files needed to complete the process and found that while the latest firmware linked in that post for the KT3 is 5.8.5 that Amazon shows 5.8.7 as the current firmware.

Is the post out of date? Is there a reason to stay with 5.8.5 instead of the current firmware?

It is your choice.
Use the version of consumer firmware you prefer.

The main reason for that list, is that people have trouble figuring out how to get other than current firmware from the Amazon download server.
(All of those links end up at the 'official' Amazon download server after being re-directed.)

There is a 'missing' version from the list, 5.8.6 (5.8.7 is on your device's Amazon page).
But so far, no one has asked that it be added.
Translation: Do you need 5.8.6?

Same issue with my PW2. Followed the instructions to the T, including the reset before jailbreak. MRPI via KUAL works while the above command does nothing. Any thing to worry about? Will a future update from Amazon remove jailbreak?

You have a PW2, so you didn't reach Step #5 of the current jailbreak.

After installing the factory firmware image, you should have gone to:

Where you could have taken either of two paths -
Followed the directions in the "After factory downgrade ..." section.
In which case you will have a "Jailbroken" document on your device.
Or followed the original directions in the "Install" section which follows.
(If you followed the "Install" section, open the 'Install' spoiler there and tell us if you saw the jailbreak confirmation described.)

Then you should have returned to the current jailbreak instructions -
Skipped Steps #5 and #6 -
Completed Steps #7 and #8.

Please confirm which of the above is the "T" you followed.

Also post what the OS is on your PC and what you used to download the various things with on that PC.

Really appreciate everyone's work on here. Enjoying my new jailbreak right at the start of the new year.

There is one thing I can't seem to get to work in my PW3 and that's blocking the OTA updates. I tried adding the update.bin.tmp.partial directory and I still got an update to 5.8.7 this morning on wifi. Nothing is broken from the jailbreak but I would still like to have control over the updates. Any thoughts?

I manually updated to 5.8.7 to get that new Bold Ember font and it reset my screensavers to stock Amazon. Is there a way I can get my cover screensaver back (I'm guessing the jailbreak held)?

Only the things required to install our packages are bridged across Amazon updates.
The general rule:
If something is broke, re-install it.

For OUR packages with the filename pattern of update_*.bin, you can put them all in /mrpackages at the same time and MrPI will install them with a single execution.

No.

If you had been watching during the first restart after installing the new Amazon image, you would have seen the messages on the screen from the bridge code.

But often people look away from the Kindle's screen while it restarts.

Crap. New update. Put the files (kindle-linkss-0.24N/kindle-python-0.14.N-KOA)_ in the MRP installer folder on my Kindle Oasis and it's still shaded in the "Update your Device" and also won't let me load the KUAL.

Tips and any advice immensely helpful. Thanks ahead of time.
